That's why I'm on Boost Mobile. I get Sprint's ****** towers, but hey, calls rarely drop, I can stream music in my car without a hiccup, pay a small monthly fee, I get 5 gigs of data versus their stingy ass 1 and best of all don't have to put up with these 2 shiesters and their BS.

Americans really do get shafted by their mobile phone service suppliers - its gotten worse in the last year or so but we still have it much better in the UK.

Ah... The hypocrisy of the Apple Faithful as modeled by the company they fawn over.

AT&T raises the price a mere $5 and the faithful spew hate.

Apple raises the price, the faithful swoon and sing “Take My Money“

It's easier to justify why the iPad Pro 9.7", new MacBook etc received a price bump. An activation fee? Completely unnecessary.

Apple isn't perfect, but is definitely less annoying than these carriers.

Look someone has to get paid to push the on button. He or she needs a raise every year so there is nothing wrong with what ATT is doing.

Wait wait wait...

... the way how this is written sounds like this is a good thing.

"... to Match Verizon's New Fee"?

So, to make sure that I'm not going insane or something: is this is good thing?

Because if it's not, then I suggest changing the title of the article slightly.

Man.. if T-Mobile had the great coverage that I'm getting with Verizon I'd switch in a heartbeat. Their Binge On feature is enough to convince me to upgrade. But since their coverage is not anywhere near great in my area, guess I'm staying with VZW.

Aren't you one of the "faithful" (i.e. don't you buy a lot of Apple products, too)?
I've seen many posts and threads on these forums from Apple customers unhappy with their prices, but carry on with the sweeping generalizations.

T-Mobile does now! I can show you the receipt for $20 each activation for our new iPhone SEs... and that was signing up for their $120/month Unlimited LTE plan!

Yes, T-Mobile charges a "sim kit fee" of $20. They even charged me that on my new 9.7" iPad Pro, even though that model uses the embedded Apple sim. So they didn't even have to provide a SIM card and I got charged $20.

"Let's rip off our customers even more now!"

I bought a new iPhone SE, gave my 5S to my wife to replace her older 4S.
However she needed to replace the SIM as the 5S uses a MicroSim.

her NZ telco (not the same as mine) simply gave her a new SIM, zero cost and set the new SIM to be her existing number.
and it should be all working by the time we get home.

Took all of 2 minutes and we were set.

The US system is ****.

I'm confused. If I buy a sim-free phone, paid in full, and walk into the AT&T store and they activate it...I'm still charged the fee? What if I buy the sim-free phone and walk into the Apple Store to activate it?

Only phone companies would have a price (raising) war.

In New Zealand, that would be stopped pretty damn quickly by the Telecoms ombudsman and by our consumer rights organisations.

Our government forced our telcos to compete country wide so that we have REAL competition.
And our broadband is being paid for by our government, ANY ISP can "lease" capability so that anyone in NZ has access to multiple ISPs offering ADSL/VDSL/Fibre.

I have VDSL running at 70/30 ( and I regularly get 6MB/s downloads, yes that MegaBytes), no data cap, no traffic shaping, no port blocking, no ******** for all of about US$64/month.

Seriously ... this isn't 2004. I know back in the day, pre-paid services were looked down upon .. but the truth of the matter is that you can get a pretty decent phone, include iphones, on these services and pay less per month, and there is no activation fee. Boost Mobile (Sprint) had unlimited 4g for $60 a month, yea, sprint sucks ... but Straight Talk now has 10g a month for $55 and most of their phones use verizon towers. The only downside is that some (all?) of these services tend to throttle your data during peak hours. Doesn't really bother me much.

I seriously have no clue why people who would complain about a $5 dollar activation fee increase and would seem to be so strapped for cash, yet still pay for plans. To each their own.

On the other hand, I am not addicted to my phone. Most people are. I have actually thought about buying a flip phone from verizon for $15 a month and getting an Ipod touch.

I've never done any of that IMEI stuff, just pop my SIM out and pop it into a new phone. I do it a few times a month to activate some iPhones. I certainly hope this isn't the case. Pretty ridiculous
What's weird is that last month I bought an unlocked LG G Flex2 AT&T version, and was trying to get it to update, so I took the SIM card out of my AT&T iPhone and stuck it in the Flex2. After a day of still not getting updates, I put the SIM back in my iPhone. When my bill came this month, I saw that for my line it showed my service ended the date I switched the SIM and was restarted the next day! No extra fees or anything, but I was surprised AT&T stopped and started my plan accordingly!

I don't understand the whole you have to pay to still be a customer.

I am so happy I left at&t (proper) and went to cricket. None of this crap.
You mean like paying a fee for the privilege to spend my money at Costco or Sams Club? It's amazing what people do, yet complain about paying a few dollars here and there...
