I know people dont really believe phone support personnel but i was just told that there would be no pre-ordering of the next iphone.
He stated that this was a desicision by Apple due to the demand last year for the 4 and the unability to fulfill orders on time.

what the?

It's unlikely that there won't be any preorders.

Well if the AT&T Reps are anything like the Vodafone reps here in the UK, I wouldn't believe anything they say.

Sales reps are generally the last to know about these sort of things

i went up the chain of support people and the lady over him said she hadn't heard that at all. Go figure.
just throwing it out for conversation.

but its not too far fetched of an idea because Apple didn't allow pre-orders or reservations for the iPad 2 this year, this year it was first-come first-served.

It's usually the case that these support reps not only know less than most, but they often know less than us even on day-of. I've had many a conversation with reps on the phone who didn't know anything about the iPhone 4 even after it was announced. A lot of, "Oh there's another one coming? We haven't been breifed on it yet."

Many of them don't care much about this stuff like we do. It's just their job, 5 days a week.

I've had situations where AT&T reps have provided me with inaccurate information regarding preorders. In regards to something like this, it is the safest bet to wait until the keynote or product release, as everything else is just speculation.

Interesting, I heard the same rumor, indirectly, from an apple employee here in London but had dismissed it out of hand!?

Sounds like a tactic to get you to buy something else right now, instead of pushing your luck and waiting.

i was checking my eligibility dates to make sure i wasnt screwed. i let my son take my upgrade and im going to use his.

hmm.. they did say it was an apple decision.

AT&T reps are not informed of nothing about the iPhone release or if there will be a release. I would know. So that's BS.

I'm expecting just basic reservations like Apple does with their phones every year.
Ahh, Apple allowed direct pre-orders just last year for the iPhone 4.

Pre-order on order date and free shipping direct to your address on launch day. Many orders shipped directly from China and we tracked them all the way.

Yes, Apple also took basic reservations for in-store pickup.

Dave

no pre-ordering means they will have enough for us to pick them up in store??

Maybe the iphone 5 carriers includes AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. That's why they don't do pre-ordering anymore if that is true
