iPad activations on AT&T more tripled from last year's iPad launch, according to a statement released by AT&T today. The carrier did not release any specific activation numbers, however.

Last year, the cellular 4th-generation iPad and the first-generation iPad mini launched several weeks after the Wi-Fi only models did. AT&T's statement does not differentiate between the iPad and the iPad mini.
iPad activations on AT&T increased more than 200% over the past three days compared to last year's launch weekend, driven by consumer excitement around the new iPad Air and the popularity of AT&T Mobile Share, which lets customers add an iPad to their existing data plan for just $10 a month. We also saw strong demand for AT&T Next, which offers customers an iPad for $0 down on the nation's fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network.
The iPad Air went on sale Friday across the U.S., though the new iPad mini is not yet available.

AT&T offers zero-down and zero-percent financing on iPads to its customers through its AT&T Next program with standalone data plans, session-based on-demand data plans, or a $10/month addition to its Mobile Share plans.

Update: Though AT&T's press release says activations "increased more than 200%" from last year, suggesting that activations had tripled from 2012, AllThingsD says an AT&T spokesperson clarified that sales were double those of a year ago, not tripled as the statement still claims on AT&T's website.

Update 2: AT&T has clarified again, stating that the original press release is correct and activations are more than triple what they were last year, and that the numbers are compared to the November 2012 cellular iPad launch weekend.

IMO - the iPad Air is simply the best product Apple has launched since the iPhone 4. Using it is remarkable. I was so close to moving on from Apple. So close to buying a Nexus 5 and moving away from iOS.

I didn't purchase the iPhone 5S (the first iPhone I haven't owned). Then the iPad Air happened. It's plain magical. If there was a product SJobs really helped build it was this one.

I think it's important to note that AT&T does not finance their iPads or smartphones on next without actually having an active data plan on the device. The on demand data although available requires the ipad to be purchased out right.

I picked up a 64GB ipad from AT&T on Next it's going to be something like 39 a month and 75 up front for taxes in one year i'll be swapping it for the newest ipad.

I was going to say this somewhere else but now that you mentioned

With the iPad Air Apple has finally honored Steve Jobs memory

Now that you have an A7-equipped iPad Air, will you be getting the A7-equipped iPhone 5s?

Is that 39 a month plus your data plan?

Went in to update a sim card on my son's 4S and walked out with a 32gb iPad Air thru the next program. Painless process and a great device- screen was cracked on my iPad 2 so upgrade was needed.

Sorry gave a little incorrect info looked at my paperwork and its 41.50 per month plus 10 dollars for having it on my mobile share plan. I share 15 GB of data among 8 total devices and an additional 6.99 for the insurance in case I break it.

Over the one year i've paid 41.50 for 12 months = 498 plus the 76 in taxes i paid. 574. If i choose to keep it 8 more months of 41.50 which is 332 and it equals to buying the iPad out full price.

It also gives me the benefit of avoiding the hassle of selling my iPad on craigslist or to any of those stupid trade in places. This year i sold my iPad at gamestop got 555 for a 4th gen iPad 32gb with LTE from AT&T. Figured it was a good deal since i could only fetch about 400 for it on craigslist and I had an xbox one on pre order with them anyway.

I've been paying for my 10 dollars of data for like 3 years now so it's not a big deal for me.

I don't think so. I still have the iPhone 5 and don't think you really need the power with a small screen and an iPhone. I hope the iPhone 6 will be another device I can't wait to get my hands on.

Again, no crap, the iPad 4 was a minor update of an update that came out 6 months earlier, most iPad 3 felt screwed and weren't updating to the iPad 4 which was just a lighting port update (and A6X but that's expected)

But they're including the iPad mini too...

Yeah but I wish I could get mine before the 12-21st, I ordered at 6am on Nov 1st, wasn't sent a confirmation till 2pm that it was going to shipping, then notified later that they were backordered due to the 8 hour delay in processing my order

I remember I was upset when I just bought the iPad 3 then 6 months later at the end of a keynote they said "oh yeah,by the way....we've got a new iPad with a better chip and a lighting connector. Good night and drive home safely" I didn't upgrade to the 4 just because if that.

I believe AT&T was also taking $100 off the price of the iPad if you activated it (renewed/added to your 2 year contract?). My mom walked in this weekend to get a 5S and was going to wait on a rMini later this year, but upon seeing (and feeling) the Air plus the $100 off incentive pushed her to purchase it.

This holiday quarter is going to be Insane!! iPad sales are going to be huge. And iPhone sales are going to be huge!
