After four years of planning, this catches them by surprise? Someone at Muni HQ isn't reading their mail.

usually with government agencies and such due to the budgets they work with the cost doesnt usually get justified until it stops working.

It's stupid Tim Cook's fault.

He SOOO needs to go.

Stupid MacRumors.

An article about a ten year old iPhone.

No articles on new Macs.

Where are the new Macs?

Stupid Jony, too.

All stupid.

Lucky, the phone coverage in Germany is still utter crap and i have a plan on all three.

Was in Costa Rica for vacation, even had LTE in the jungle and never saw anything below 3G. Got back home and just out of Frankfurt ... 1 bar of edge before dying completely. At my parents place i turn on airplane mode and use wifi cuz 1 bar of edge is useless. Some places i even see "GPRS"!

At the train station in Stuttgart it shows me 3G but nothing loads. So embarrassing for a european country.

Rant over :D
The train station in Stuttgart is a common issue with o2/e+plus. You said you have all three? Try Telekom in Stuttgart, and you'll have LTE everywhere!

FINALLY! We actually had a 2G tower near my work. Yes.... Really! I'd call constantly complaining that they needed to upgrade cuz we couldn't even send a simple text and calls dropped or were garbled. I was so pleased when I came back to work after the NY holiday to see LTE on my phone! *gasp!*

Such a beautifully constructed device - used it as an iPod Touch on Wi-Fi for many years before finally retiring it.

Goes to show you how well made these devices are constructed and they last beyond most other competitor devices. There is still a demographic using the 3G as an iPhone today.

They're not freeing up much spectrum, by the way. They already had the bare minimum allocated to 2G/EDGE in most of their market, so you're not going to see a truckload of additional bandwidth available for 4G/LTE.

This WILL however free up physical antenna space on towers, rack space in the radio shacks attached to these towers, and resources that could otherwise be better employed. So it's a good thing in the end.

And if you want to keep playing with your iPhone 1 for some reason, just get a T-Mobile SIM. Their 2G/EDGE will be up for a bit longer.

i have an original iphone still, i use it as a noise machine for when i sleep. what's amazing to me is on the rare occasions that it gets disconnected from its power supply, in airplane mode it still gets a good 10 hours of battery life at least. amazing for a nearly 10 year old device. they dont make em like they used to.
Disconnect your current phone from power, leave it on airplane mode, don't use it for anything but white noise.. I guarantee you double or tireless that battery life. Ignorant comment....

What about all these sensors devices, monitoring, alarms - devices with GSM communication? They are dead now. Did all these devices migrate to newer (3G+) versions or switched to non-AT&T instead?

I think that's why BMW shut down the older connected drive stuff.

Yup... some BMW owners were really ticked off by this. I get it that things get phased out, but some of the BMWs affected by this were as late as 2014 model year. I know on some models they are offering a new cell. module to make it work again.

Mine still works great as well, at least for music. The internet is way too slow for anything, even on wifi. The battery life is really good for such an old device.

Music app is probably better than 8.4/9/10 ('Apple Music' Music App era) :D

I don't know. The voice call quality on my GSM Motorola Rokr E8 is far superior to my 3G/4G iPhone SE. Just saying. So either GSM is superior, or the Rokr is better designed device...or both. At least there is T-Mobile.

I have two of them that I power on just to check out maybe once a year. Is T-Mobile 2G shut down too? Or could someone put a T-Mobile sim in it?

Well, it was a great phone. If Verizon ever turns off their legacy network, it will cause problems for many of the older car connected systems, older OnStar, Mercedes MBrace/Teleaid, etc. They already went through that once when analog was turned off.
