I can get the blue bar that says "internet tethering" to show u. p and everything LOOKS like it is working, but I have no internet access (win 7 connected with cable).

Been messing around with this for a couple days and can't seem to get it working. On a side note, when I disconnect the phone and reconnect, iTunes cannot see it. At that point, I cannot shut down the computer normally and have to do a hard reboot. Then when I restart iTunes can see the phone, but only one time.

It has me thinking there is something wrong with the iPhone to iTunes connection, since that is certainly not the right behavior. This is on a new laptop, not the main computer.

Any ideas? Quite a mess.

ATT checked on their end and said everything was OK. They nearly messed everything up by pinging my phone and sending it into restore mode when I restarted it. Fortunately, with the help of this forum, I was able to get my data off before restoring.

Apple said it will cost me $30 since I have a 3GS. I may go that route if I get stuck, but I am thinking about giving up go another route.

Jailbreak your iPhone and buy MyWi ($20 - one time price) from Cydia to tether. If you have the unlimited data plan than it will be perfect for you.

Does it work if tethered with Bluetooth?

FWIW, my MacBook Pro won't tether via USB if I'm booted into the 64 bit kernel. But it works via USB if booted in 32 bit. Works both ways via bluetooth.

I was just about to try the Bluetooth connection, the adapter is in the mail though.

I did JB in the past to get things like background apps, but it is not really for me anymore. I would rather just go the normal route.

I should get the adapter by tomorrow and I will give it a shot, thanks.

If one uses the bluetooth adapter, does it completely bypass iTunes then? I am hoping so since I think iTunes is the culprit here.

And yes, it is frustrating that there is no bluetooth on my $1k+ laptop. Not that an adapter is expensive or anything, but it is just annoying. Fortunately they are real small now.
