competition is good. thanks verizon for knocking on the door...

i am willing to bet wifi tethering which is included in 4.3 will be part of the at&t offering. this is a good deal. hard to eat up 4GB of data unless you refuse to connect to wifi. i use wifi at home and office to supplement and have managed fine with 2GB. with tethering this additional 2GB adjustment will be very helpful. i also like the fact that at&t will bill me $10 per GB above my subscription. it seems very fair.

unlimited is not sustainable. just because the carriers once offered it does not mean that we should always expect it.

i will stick with at&t since i do use simultaneous voice and data, plan to use tethering and appreciated the faster speeds. for those that go to verizon, i ask, what good is a data connection that drops each time you get a phone call? can't imagine that tethering will work well under those circumstances.

Correct, except that it's $20 for tethering, not $15.

So the options are:
$15/250 MB/iPhone only
$25/2 GB/iPhone only
$45/4 GB/iPhone and tether, data alloted between the devices however you want.

That's a lot more reasonable than before. But they really need to allow hotspot (once 4.3 is live) to make it worth it to me. Then you could do a wifi only iPad and use it like a 3G iPad.
I got a price wrong. Kill me. Regardless, I'm correct outside of that.

As an iP4 owner, and iPad owner, this is appealing. 4gb across both those devices would be excellent! I'm on wifi a ton anyway, this is actually right up my alley, thanks at&t! However, I'd have to lose my unlimited on my iP4, which, I could deal with, if it gave my iPad constant access without me paying for 3G on that too!

Pretty sure that's exactly what I said. I wasn't being snide. I was just agreeing that you had gotten it right with one small correction.

It's not like your going to be downloading a 10GB HD movie through tethering?

Honestly, is anyone really going to use that much data in 1 month? It's quite a lot, actually, for a mobile device and tethering use.

Though the price is a bit looney. For that, they probably should go unlimited.

How much data is spent to stream videos on youtube?

Shut up and take my money ATT!!!

If ATT listened to their customers, they'd just bring back the $30/mo unlimited (I've never given mine up) and let us add tethering/hotspot to that for $10-$15...

Or, just take the same $20/mo for tethering, and make $5/mo MORE just by not jerking their customers around so much...

Or...

If I could activate tethering on a when needed basis, like Intl roaming (maybe an extra $10-$20 just for that next bill), and never lose my $30/unlimited.. I'd use it.. frequently... when I find myself in a hotel with bad, or no, wifi..

All ATT would have to do, is shut up, and take my money...

Why are they making this so difficult?

95% certain in my case. Never underestimate corporate stupidity. Afterall, they were charging for tethering without including any extra data until now. :)

BUT it would sure look stupid for AT&T to lack Wifi tethering, when Verizon iPhones have it. So I'm fairly certain it'll be enabled.

There's reports of Wifi tethering already working for people running the 4.3 betas who have tethering on their account.

That would make you... a senior exec at AT&T or someone with direct access to such a person? Other than that, we're all just assuming, though it's certainly logical.

Wow. I don't understand these telephone and wireless internet companies. As far as I'm concerned, they all suck. The advantages and disadvantages to each balance out pretty much. Verizon sucks. At&t sucks. Sprint sucks. Obviously our internet usage on our cell phone over 3G is limited. Very limited. I would love to see at&t's budget spending and where all there money goes and there income and all that. So they need money to pay their workers, they need money to power their cell towers and switchboards, they need money to get their satellites up and running, they need money to make their products, they need money to build their network. For them, money and resources are limited. For us, money and 3G internet usage is limited. Seems to me that it doesn't matter who you choose to go with. You're gonna get screwed either way. Maybe in 30 years we'll be more satisfied.

LOL this plan sounds so terrible. Honestly AT&T needs to get with the program.

Not that far off verizon, really. You either pay $50/mo for unlimited on the phone and 2 GB to tether or $45/mo for 4 GB used any way you want. I think it's quite debatable which of those is more desireable.

Who are these limits aimed toward?

Networking equipment doesn't have a limited life. They keep transferring gigabytes of data a month.

There isn't a finite amount of network data. They don't run out if someone downloads too much.

How can AT&T charge (data access fee), double-charge ("oh, you're using your computer? Tethering charge!", and triple-charge ("you actually *downloaded* something? Overage charge") for something like this?

Another half baked carrot that does not provide the peoples needs.
Who thinks 4gb even scratches the surface on anyones teathering needs.

Glad I have unlimited data, and the Handylight app.

Is the Handylight app a legal use of the network?

FWIW, my tethering usage is typically just over 2gb/month so this sort of plan bump would be VERY useful when considering Verizon. Right now I'm holding off on a Veriphone because the tethering option is only 2gb/month. If it was 3-4 I'd purchase the phone and plan.

Maybe I have low expectations, but if AT&T expands on this by converting Tethering to Hotspot when iOS supports it, I'll be content. Of course I'd rather have a true unlimited plan that includes Mobile Hotspot and costs less than $50, but just giving me the extra 2GB for my $20 tethering fee is a big improvement from the current state.

AT&T today announced forthcoming changes to its smartphone tethering data plans, increasing the monthly data limit to 4 GB from the current 2 GB cap. The change, set to take effect on February 13th, comes as AT&T rolls out mobile hotspot functionality for the new HTC Inspire 4G handset, although the company has not addressed whether it will support the similar hotspot functionality for the iPhone once iOS 4.3 is released to the public.AT&T currently offers two monthly data plans for iPhone customers: DataPlus with 200 MB of data for $15 and DataPro with 2 GB of data for $25. Tethering is available to DataPro customers for an additional charge of $20 per month, but until now has not offered any additional data capacity, with tethering data coming out of the same 2 GB cap allotted to regular smartphone use. The changes announced today essentially mean that the extra $20 tethering fee will also bring customers an additional 2 GB of data per month to be used between their phone and tethered devices.

WOWEE.

This is bull.

Why do I have to pay for a feature that is already included in the iPhone iOS? I am already paying for data, it is none of AT&Ts business how I get that data other than I dont go over my limit. Time to finally jailbreak i think. American mobile operators are nothing better than organized crime.............

I'll vote negative until carriers stop charging extra fees on top of capped data fees.

I don't need more data... I just want to be able to use the features built into the phone (tethering and soon to be hotspot) with the 2GB plan I already have without have to pay an additional fee to use MY data. I pay for the data, I should be able to use it however I want!

Or jailbreak and get unlimited tethering for free.

With the news that AT&T has been charging people as much as 300% more than they should be for the actual amount of data that was used I'm happily using their network for free.

It averages out AT&T's theft through completely illegal over billing of their own customers.
