Aww, how nice of At&T spending money for the BIG citys that lose calls maybe once in a BLUE $%^&*@# MOON!!! WHAT ABOUT THE CITYS THAT HAVE NO SERVICE LIKE MINE?? I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE AN UPGRADE AT&T SO I CAN TALK IN MY OWN HOUSE!!?!? Isnt that what a phone is supposed to do???
Man i really HATE at&t. WTF are they doing? Really, they are seriously going to help the reception in citys like NEW YORK LA?!?!?!?! WTF why dont they take a look at there CRAPPY coverage map, and help the citys that DONT have service unlike LA and NY.
I live about 2 hours away from LA and i cant even talk in my house. Dude im sick of AT&T and all there crap. Apple should really move on to another carrier. AT&T Kinda reminds me of one of those dead beat, wife beating husbands, the iphone puts out all the work and then at&t holds them back from almost everything, AND THERE NOT THAT SPECIAL.

It isn't dirt cheap for any cell carrier to install a new cell site. Along with the actual tower structure costs, the antennas and the base station components, they have to install a generator, and run a fiber backhaul to the nearest node. In rural areas, that can be up to hundreds of miles.

I am not sure if this is related but for what it is worth, 3g service in midtown manhattan has been much better over the last week or so...usually i could not get a data connection for the life of me because there were so many people with iphones, blackberrys, and data cards trying to access the network.

now i can get a good, stable 3g data connection all day, every day..the way it should be...i can't believe that i am going to say this..but i have been happy with at&t's service in NYC...wow..i never thought i would say that..

Can anyone tell me what's being used in Houston area and if and when they'll be doing upgrades. I can never find any info on this damn city.

Interesting.
So places saturated with 1900 frequency subscribers they can spread the load with 850.
Im suprised they didnt think of it sooner. Makes sense.

I think it had something to do with normal GSM subscribers. They (at least in DC) had GSM on 850 and didn't want to degrade service to them (Since 850 has better building penetration). As more and more devices have 3G it began making more sense to give up the GSM 850 spectrum and give it to 3G instead.

is there a way to see when or if the 850 service will be turned on in a city? I drop calls all the time.

AT&T is coming out with a home cell site you plug into your internet connection and it will give you home service.

See this on Endgadget

Such a crock. These companies are definitely smarter than the consumer. I can't imagine paying extra for a box that gives me service, when I'm already paying for the service!

This is ingenious for them. They don't have to spend money updating the towers for better signal and in return they get more money by selling these to idiots.

Like taking candy from a baby, except adults don't cry, they just dish out cash.

This needs to happen yesterday.

Is there any way to tell (maybe from the diagnostic mode) which band your iPhone is currently using?

I know, how nice of them.
You're paying for high speed internet, and also for cellphone service.
And then you'd have to buy this device that will use your homes internet connection to save bandwith and not have to improve anything on the cellphone companys network. And you're paying them a monthly fee to use that machine to use your home network to make phone calls.
They should give those for free to people that cant get service at home.

3Gs reception SUCKS!@!!!

I just got the iPhone 3GS, the day it came out. I work in a major mall in the Portland area. If I walk 20 feet inside my store, I get *NO SERVICE*... if I walk back out into the main mall hallway.. 5 bars of 3G.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FREAKING KIDDING ME. This is a joke, right?! The reception is THIS FRAKKING WEAK??

My Palm Pre (which I returned to get this) got perfect internet and voice everywhere in this mall. No problems!

Somebody please tell me... that this 850 MHZ thing is going to fix this... I want A SURE FRAAKINNG ANSWER because God knows AT&T won't tell me crap. They won't say if/when these upgrades are coming... they won't say what the bandwidth is... they won't send someone out to look into my service problems... what the hell?

I'm about '' this close to returning this damn piece of CRAP phone that can't even MAKE A DAMN PHONE CALL INSIDE OF BUILDINGS OR DRIVING AROUND ON TOP OF A HILL. RAGE!

Is THIS crappy service really what all you iPhone people have been dealing with for the last few years?! ?!?!?!?! How did you frakking survive?! This is a JOOOOKEEE

^Yes, 850mhz is supposed to be better indoors than 1900mhz. Most of the SF Bay area is already covered in 850+1900 I believe. If one has an older 1900mhz only phone and an 850/1900mhz phone, a clear difference can be seen between the coverage/signal strengths.

I live in San Ramon, CA. I used to get 1 bar in my house with frequent dropped calls, within the last 2 weeks it has jumped to 5 bars all the time with zero dropped calls, so whatever they are doing is working, and I'm happy with it.
