It's staggering how many of the outraged posters here don't seem to realize that this is not applicable to any existing iPhone contracts and that Verizon already charges $350 for its smartphone ETFs...

It's because they are out of touch and only see what they want to see. Logic and common sense don't exist on message boards for the most part.

You know what? F At&t!!

They want blood, they want you for everything you are, like a slave to their crap service. The only reason anyone would even go to at&t is because of the iPhone.

I can't believe this. Forget them now and the iPhone. Will just settle for iPad or iPod Touch because this is a test, I swear. A test to see just how stupid all humans are.

Not here and not me. Take the iPhone and att crap service and shove it up your....... (you know where) punks.

Never again.

I love stupid responses like this.

Verizon does the same thing and they currently charge $25 more. When I left Verizon several years ago I had to pay $75, because I still had 3 months left on my contract. It was either pay or be stuck with a crappy/crippled phone that didn't work in my house. I for one would take AT&T over Verizon any day of the week.

This will definitely deter people from buying iPhone solely to use on T-mobile.

When I had the iPhone 3gs, there was a promo and I paid the following to use it on T-mobile:
iPhone 3gs - $50
one month service - ~$90
ETF + tax - ~$190
-------------
total = 330

Now.... ETF is 150 more so that bumps the total to almost $500 and only for edge speeds.

yikes!

Verizon has a $350 ETF, so I don't see your logic.

As for me, I'm jumping ship to an EVO 4G on Sprint. Sick of over-paying for service and for an OS that is starting to fall behind. Looking forward to taking back control of the phone and service that I pay over $2500 for (over 2 years).

But you'll overpay for the ability to use your phone with 4G and as a hotspot. have fun.

I had no intention of switching to Verizon if they got the new iPhone. But this move by AT&T pisses me off. **** you AT&T! Now I'll be switching, even if it means waiting to get the new iPhone!

Ouch, that's okay since I've had them for so long but I would hate to have to leave. I hate that companies do this, I hate the contracts but if you want to get the good deals you have to play the game.

I don't get why your mad. Verizon charges 350 dollars for their ETF which is 25 dollars more than what AT&T would charge as of the 1st. So what's the issue then?

If anything it makes no sense why you would be mad. Since going to verizon will cost you 25 more dollars as far as an ETF. There is no logic in your argument.

I predict ATT iPhone release in June and Verizon iPhone release in September or October. For the early birds, you can re-sign with ATT and get the iPhone early.

My ATT contract is expiring next month and I will go month to month until Verizon iPhone is released. If not released by September or October, I will go for the latest and greatest Android phone.

Good thing I am an existing customer. Like others, I am not even sure I am going to jump ship if/when the iPhone comes out for Verizon (specifically due to family plan).

I disklike ETFs.

yup

didn't think of that. the issue is the phone subsidy...i've been with AT&T for, like 11 years now...Cingular/AT&T. I'd stay with them unless they get a LOT more expensive that Verizon.
ah I didnt even think of that. good point. I bet you so many people figured out it was easy to just buy a subsidized iphone, break contract, then sell it on ebay for $600.

regardless, it is definitely related to iphone.

That's it! I'm going back to land lines and CB radio. :)

Seriously, at&t, you are low lives.

I'll postpone my purchase and wait for LTE to level the playing field.

When Verizon did this six months ago, I said AT&T would do it this summer with the new iPhone. Seems I called it.

This is also another indication that AT&T won't be the exclusive carrier for the iPhone.

This is what I thought of when I read this. Seems to me there might be another carrier coming down the pike!!!

This could be good!

This story doesn't particularly concern me as I don't live in America but...

HORRIBLE MONEY GRABBERS.

TRULY DESPICABLE BEHAVIOUR.

But you'll overpay for the ability to use your phone with 4G and as a hotspot. have fun.

If 4G is faster than 3G, I think those $10 a month are worth paying
Thank god I don't need the tethering service, so it works for me, I save $30 :)
The ETF from Sprint varies, but the highest you would pay is $200, and after the 5th month, it goes down $10 every month.
I love the iPhone but i hate contracts, and apple not giving us, the consumers, what we want on our phones.

325 US$ ... still to cheap! why not charge 100.000 US$? or 1 mio? seems like the companies can do EVERYTHING with their customers in the US...

I think apple extended their exclusivity contract with AT&T, and agreed to this, in exchange of the plan for the iPad 3G.

Grossly out of Touch with business aren't we.

We need some regulation here. That's extortion. There's no way that's fair.
It is completely fair, you have the right to refuse the contract. Besides it is considerably less than the retail cost of an iPhone. What do you expect that AT&T will eat its portion of iPhones cost after a month?
I bet the maximum they are going out of pocket on day one for subsidizing the phones is $200.
That is ignorant, you can check with Apple for the ful price of the iPhone if you want. Alternatively look at the price of a Touch and then add in all the hardware and licensing fees for a 3G phone.
We need some regulation here.
No we don't. What we need is a educational system that doesn't release upon the public some of the stupid commenters seen in this thread.
Next they'll make you come to a store in person to cancel your contract and take you in the back room surrounded by 3 pushy salesmen that alternately threaten you and beg you to stay on.
Have you every purchased a major piece of capital? Nothing is written in stone.

And that's the rationale for the Google Nexus One ETF fiasco.

Google charged $350 (not counting T-Mobile's own $200 ETF) because Google has to "repay" that amount of commission back to T-Mobile.

It also means that if Google demands T-Mobile to pay them a billion dollars in commission for each Nexus One contract sign-up and T-Mobile okey's it --- then your ETF would be 1 billion dollars.

I disklike ETFs.

You may dislike them, but you get a discount on hardware. iPhone w/ 2yr $200 :: no contract $600.

Save $400 w/ contract --ETF $325. So, would you rather save $400 and face Max $325 to leave, or Pay $400 more for no ETF?
