AT&T's greed? Or the greed by those who sign contracts to get a phone that they plan to sell for profit?

ah I didnt even think of that. good point. I bet you so many people figured out it was easy to just buy a subsidized iphone, break contract, then sell it on ebay for $600.

regardless, it is definitely related to iphone.

It was expected...
Considering their initial costs for subsidizing an iPhone, they were most likely loosing money at the $175 fee level.

I still don't get why people bitch about it so much.
Honor the terms of your contract and the fee becomes moot.

OK, fine...

By my math that is three months service. I don't see that as a huge factor for someone who pays $100+ a month for service month after month anyway.

Three ways to deal with it:

Wait for some unspecified amount of time for the 1st generation iPhone that will support Verizon. Be an early adopter of that phone and deal with all the bugs and issues that arise. Find out that Verizon service sucks when they get pounded with new iPhone customers too.

Just plan on sticking with AT&T for the next two years (like many did for the past three years).

Pay the termination fee, jailbreak your phone and move it to another carrier other than Verizon and lose a bunch of features.

And when all the phone companies get too greedy, then perhaps some new consumer protection laws will be enacted (such as prorating the early termination fee over the length of the contract).

wow, that puts att in a really bad view.

way to kick your self and your customers in the nuts.

That's smart, and funny.

Smart because I won't pay $325 to cancel my contract.

Funny because when my contract ends I will never sign up for another AT&T service again. Period.

Your points, let's see.

1. Haven't had a dropped call since I have been with them
2. They don't fail to keep the promise until they say "We aren't going to do it." They didn't set a timeline as far as I know.

1) Survey after survey confirms that their network is the least reliable. (They all checked with more than 1 person.)

2) I am nearly positive that they originally said "by the end of 2009." Perhaps someone else can back me up on that? I don't have a link.

In Canada it's 400 for everyone, deal with it :p

lol exactly, Actually its $400 + $100 or $200 for data (depending on carrier).
ATT had to do that, or they would loose money, because no contract iphone is like $699 + tax here in Canada, and people would make loads of money by signing up and getting a subsidized iphone for $199 and then pay $175 next month to get out of contract and sell the iphone on ebay for $300 profit.

I don't know what you lot are complaining about really - it seems like you have it pretty good even with an ETF of $325. In the UK I could walk into O2, buy an iPhone 3GS 16GB for £179 ($258), and expect to pay £30pm for 18 months for it ($43). If I want to walk away after 1 month of service, I would have to give O2 £30 x 17 remaining months - £510 ($736). So a $325 ETF is nothing in comparison!

Why are family plans a barrier to switching carriers?
Bigger discounts most likely.
I get a 27% discount through my FAN account that applies to all services.
Verizon only offers my company a 10% discount on the main line... that there is enough for me to stay.
Well that and the fact that Verizon service blows in my area.

This goes into effect Junes 1st....so you will never sign up for another ATT contract except the one you will be signing up to after June 1?

I'm confused.

Why is this a problem? I signed a contract and I plan on sticking to it. AT&T works well in Virginia and I have no reason to use anybody else.

If you hate AT&T and they're oh-so-evil, or you don't get good service in your area then don't sign a contract and you'll never have to feel the sting of a higher ETF.

Does early termination just mean leaving AT&T or does it include switching to the new iPhone or contract whenever it comes out?

I'd like to update but my iPhone is only a year old. Can that be done?

Bingo - if you don't like their terms, take your business elsewhere. Simple!

Personally this does not affect me as I will stay with the thiefs but I would highly recommend to those that are considering to BAIL NOW before June 1st and/or do NOT click yes on any new agreements between now and then.

Remember that when they change their Agreement with customers you have to accept, if you do not then you do not fall under the new agreement and remain on your original.

well i dont know how it is for other people, but from I have seen with others. say you have yourself and 2 additional people on an ATT family plan. You want to move from att to VZ.

you have to buy 3 new phones for the VZ network (not sure if there are some phones that work on all networks) and then pay activation fees for those 3 new lines.

its also a barrier in that its generally more of a pain/hassle to transfer 3 or 4 lines.

I wonder if this applies to contracts that start after June 1, 2010, or if it applies retroactively to the ETFs of contracts that started prior to that date. I would think that the ETF would be protected by contract for those older ones.

1) The surveys contradict my experiences then.

2) The only confirmation I could find of a 2009 date was an article from CNET stating it was confirmed but then saying:

It's not clear when AT&T will roll out the tethering service; some point in 2009 appears to be the only stated time frame.

http://news.cnet.com/at&t-confirms-tethering-coming-to-iphone-in-2009/

They may have said 2009, but that article is pretty funny nonetheless.

Not a standard 400 for everyone

In Canada it's 400 for everyone, deal with it :p

Its not a fee of 400 dollars here in Canada. The terms are clear in the contract -

The ECF is the greater of (ii) $100 or (iii) $20 per month remaining in the service agreement, to a maximum of $400 (plus applicable taxes), and applies on each line in the plan that is terminated.

if you only have 6 months left, your paying 120 bucks. 1 year = 240

check your facts.

AT&T is the MAIN reason why I am not getting this new iPhone when it's released. My contract is up in Feb' and I am certainly jumping ship!

S@#! you AT&T!
