Not a lot of incentive to re-up with AT&T with potential diff carriers on the horizon and a $325 penalty.

For me the incentive is being able to keep my unused minutes and early nights .

VZW has pretty much made it clear they would never offered either of those things and they can't match my Foundation discount of 19 Percent off each month.

I bought my current iPhone 3G unlocked, and I will be doing the same with my next iPhone.

Why? It's not like you can use 3G on T-mobile. AT&T isn't giving u a discount on Monthly fees.

Jailbreak and unlock it yourself. Take the subsidize price.

This looks like a defensive move from ATT. Perhaps they are anticipating more and more people switching to Android (and other carriers).

Get a life.....

What happened to the FTC looking into this?

What a friggin scam.

...and should the government set price controls and policies on everything we buy and sell?

It's called a Free Market. If you don't like a service or product for whatever reason, don't buy it. There is no scam here....other than the scammers who buy these phones, terminate the contracts, and sell the devices on ebay for a hefty profit.

The FCC needs to put an end to cell phone contracts. The whole idea is anti-competitive. The airwaves belong to the people, not the cellular companies. The whole nonsense that you have to be locked in to a company in order to use any single device is criminal. We should demand that in exchange for using our bandwidth, we get the freedom to chose the service we want without being locked in for two years. Sure, you can buy an unlocked phone, but you are still paying the same price for service that everyone else does. How about we legally require all phones to be sold unlocked, and then we get to chose the best service at the lowest price? This would put downward pressure on both the actual cost of the phone and the service. Oh wait, that would mean capitalism. I don't blame these companies for trying to make as much money as they can, that is their job. We need to demand that the FCC starts to encourage competition and end this nonsense once and for all.

Wouldn't REQUIRING businesses to sell phones unlocked be anit-consumer because it robs the consumer of the choice to enter into a service agreement to get a phone they otherwise couldn't afford?

I could drop $299 for an iPhone -- if I had to pay $699 because the government wouldn't let them subsidize my phone, I probably would have skipped (or waited much longer to get one).

AT&T offers Android phones too.....so they don't care what smartphone you buy....as long as it is from them :)

Equally, this could be an attempt to stop people from ditching AT&T and the iPhone in search of another device on another network, especially given the explosive growth of Android based devices.

Pssst, iphone + verizon = all the people that left VZW going back to VZW.

Once again AT&T talks moocho crap and cant back it up. They need every iPhone person to stay with them so they can pay for there pathetic network to be upgraded.

What happened to the FTC looking into this?

I think they got distracted by Porn! ;)

What a friggin scam.

AT&T or your government creating an agency to look out for you and then doesn't and when it is highlighted, those in government say more government by way of regulations and new departments are needed!:rolleyes::confused:

But it does make one wonder what Steve will say at WWDC in a couple of weeks. Maybe AT&T is preparing us for the news!

AT&T's greed? Or the greed by those who sign contracts to get a phone that they plan to sell for profit?

Exactly ATT only had to resort to this like other phone companies that you love so much (Verizon) because people were ripping them off (they prefer it the other way around).

Anyways due to the timing this might be indicative of a 2-4-1 on iPhone 3GS after the new one comes out or an even steeper discount on the iPhone 4G/HD ($99 or free). /fingerscrossed

If you act now, you can get out of your contract without the termination fee due to these changes. Why not if you're gonna complain.

And I do think this is a bunch of bull.

There is so much wrong here...I don't know where to start

Phone companies offer a choice: Contracts or No Contracts. You choose. I'd rather have a choice than no choice.

The public does not own the airwaves....well, not anymore. They were sold by the FCC to the wireless providers at auction.

Capitalism is Free Market. Every time the government gets involved with more regulations and rules, it results in less choice and higher prices.

did any of you big complainers really READ the post?? Do any of you really realize what Apple is charging carriers for the phone?

If you don't want to be subject to an ETF, then DON'T get a subsidized phone!! Pay full retail for it and then you can do whatever you want!

Bottom line.. if you don't like the terms of a contract, don't sign it.

If you know you don't like a carrier, don't switch to them!

Verizon MIGHT get an iPhone after they deploy LTE, but I still seriously doubt you will see one before the end of the year, so stop twisting every little rumor into "evidence that the verizon iPhone is coming!" With all the leaks Apple has had as of late concerning the new iPhone, don't you think a CDMA iPhone would have made it's way into the light by now?

I Want To Buy An iPhone - But Not With AT&T

Thanx AT&T...I was just about ready to pop for a new yakker but you reminded me why I would NEVER do business with you.

Without the iPhone, AT&T would have already become a footnote in history along with other big dinosaur communication companies.

This is SO funny you guys!!!

Couple things to note.

If Apple releases a Verizon iPhone, they will do it at WWDC.

If they don't release one, will you jump ship to something else?

Won't you stay with ATT for the iPhone 4 anyway??

I don't see why this is SUCH a big deal. Could be cause I live in Las Vegas and have perfect coverage here. I don't even drop calls. If they came out with a vPhone (lol) I wouldn't switch anyway.

I don't see how they are ripping off the consumer, they are simply getting their subsidy back. AT&T already has a prorated ETF scheme in place.

screw ATT.. This decision MAY make me switch to verizion( which i was NEVER planning to do) if they get an iphone..

also I'm screwing you att i have my iphone jailbroken and am tethering a TON everyday so F off

Isn't this a change in terms of agreement?

And wouldn't this change allow a customer to back out if he/she does not agree with the change in terms?

ATT just like airlines

The increase in the early termination fee is outrageous. AT&T has had an exclusive contract and now they are whining about potential early terminations. Do they hear footsteps?

AT&T is just like the airlines: Stick us for every penny they can!

Ha ha. Now we know what he meant by "we don't think people will leave."

Of course, the good news is that this is the most solid fact to-date that supports the Verizon iPhone rumors.

I couldn't have said it better. All those people, like me, who are 1 year into their 2 year contract on the 3GS may consider fleeing to VZ, but this outrageous fee is supposed to prevent it going into the future. This might end up being a self fulfilling prophecy for ATT, as folks like me may consider leaving based on principal, and with the lower $175 fee. It's kind of like entering a marriage with a nasty pre-nuptual, you might not get married in the first place once you see the contract.

Those "airwaves" are not free and neither is the equipment and employees that support it.
Get a clue how things work in the real world before going off on a childish rant.

I agree with you 100%. This is exactly what AT&T is going after, ESPECIALLY since a new device that people REALLY want is about to drop.

This is to stop people from buying the handsets subsized and selling them immediately.

I have no problems with my service so I have no worries about the ETF.
