You're exactly right. I too have been receiving free upgrades since the iPhone was released. Not sure what we'll do next time we need to replace phones since we're now a multi-line home. I hate to think of what it's gonna cost me.
Just keep them in pristine shape if possible. Unlock them after the two year contract then sell it unlocked. That's what I'm planning on doing. That or start putting $20 or $40 bucks in a jar every month until upgrade time. LOL

That's fine and everything to offset the cost of a new device paid in full. But previously selling your current device 100% offset the cost of your new phone under a 2 year contract.

This x many devices = a lot of money

Personally I don’t see the difference. A two year contract is the same as an AT&T pricing plan if of a different length. This is just to confuse customers.
Whether I’m roped in for two years by the carriers, the banks or my next door neighbour - it’s the same. The only difference is that the ones that seemingly have more flexibilty are the ones that snare you for longer.

Currently
iPhone 6 (64GB) $299. Pay $85 a month after taxes for unlimited text/talk/data (Grandfathered).

2-year contract
Total $2339

24 month next program I would be paying, according to AT&T sales rep.
iPhone 6 (64GB) $25 a month plus $90 after taxes a month for unlimited text/talk/data (Grandfathered).
*the extra $5 is due to the unlimited data price increase.

24 month next program
Total $2760

A difference of $421.

So no, i don't see how its the same. I see me paying an extra $421 dollars for the same product i been paying for since the originally iPhone.

I can't see how this won't be an issue when the iPhone 7 gets released in the fall and people actually see how much more they are paying.

People will realize that ATT (and other carriers) have other plan options to go to that are cheaper. If you want to keep unlimited data, you'll be responsible for the price of the phone. Verizon customers have been doing this for quite some time.

I have three lines on my account and I have old plans that I wouldn't want to leave (or my bill would go up even more).

So like the above poster, if I stayed with AT&T this is a $1200 every 2 year difference, or $50 per month price hike plus the unlimited price hike pretty big! :)

My bill for 3 lines is $145 before tax, even if I picked the 5GB plan or something on family share, it's that same price or $10 more and it also doesn't have the subsidies, so some of us truly are losing out on the $400 per line every 2 years. :)

Then you're in the minority when compared to the subscriber base. What plan do you have?

I don't think so.

I was in a similar position too. I was paying 250 per month on AT&T and getting 5 subsidies. I am now paying $220 a month on T-Mobile for unlimited data and getting 0 subsidies.

I know you don't trust me, which I can respect, all I can say is I'm in a position to say that there are stats to back up my claim.

There are a lot of people, who paid their bills for a long time , didn't want to change anything, but suddenly Att decided to charge us more . We are not minority in the subscriber base.

That might have been true in the past but you're now a minority given that the vast majority of AT&T's current customers have moved off unlimited and/or 2-year contracts. That's why AT&T isn't worried about their bottom line in ditching the 2-year contracts.

I know a LOT of people that are still with AT&T on contract because they are still being grandfathered in to their unlimited data plans. I wonder if this is also going to result in the death of unlimited data.
I confirmed today with a rep you can keep the unlimited data as long as you don't upgrade to a data share plan. They'll try and push it, but you can keep the unlimited data even if you do have a NEXT installment plan.

Why was this needing confirmation, yet again? There's plenty of people on these forums that could have told you that.

Guess the free ride is over and now everyone has to pay full price. I guess the only time I will update is when my phone breaks or Black Friday deals come around. Target seem to offer the best so since they were giving out 450 in gift cards for a installment plan purchase on iPhones. I'll probably go for that sale when it comes around again.

Try $250......

For those who haven't upgraded early, anyone think there is a small chance AT&T will let grandfathered users get two year contract pricing on an iPhone 7 come this September? I understand that they are getting rid of 2 year contracts, but I'm asking if you think they will do it on a customer retention basis. Kind of like how people are getting early upgrades for the 6s and bill credits but this isn't exactly advertised on the AT&T website.

I'm wondering for those who used their "get out of jail free card" on an iPhone 6s, should we have saved it for one last iPhone 7 retention "Hail Mary"?

Doubt it.

You'd have as much luck as a new customer trying to get on unlimited.

Start putting 20 bucks a month in a jar. When upgrade time comes you have plenty of money to get a new iPhone.

To all of you complaining: can you buy me a $30,000 car and I only chip in $5,000? And every number of years I also expect you to do it over for me.
That's not how this works. Your comparison only makes sense if all roads in the nation were privatized and major highways were run by an oligopoly, ones that would toll you every time you drove, and limited the use of your "$5,000" automobile to only their roadways. The "subsidized" 2-year contract plans existed so that carriers could lock you into their network for two years and charge you high rates for international use. That was the trade off you got for only paying $199 for a new phone every two years.

Opponents of two-year contracts have been continually stating for years that the subsidized cost of the phone is "baked" into the monthly charges. Yet to this day, not a single person has been able to show us where those charges are. Every bill I receive has a breakdown of services and charges down to the cent, it doesn't get much more transparent than that.

How about $9.99 per month for adding a line to the old FamilyTalk plan when you're already paying the basic $60 charge for the same FamilyTalk 700 minutes. $9.99 doesn't get you more minutes so do you think they charge it for no reason?

and its $15 or $25 month on MSV to add a line.

The old family talk plan has roll over minutes. I have 4000 minutes. Nights and weekends are free talk.

Still don't understand:
Before we had contracts, now we have Next and it is a financial agreement, another words same contract. Where is the Freedom they promised!? I could buy full price phone before and I can now.

Same way, going to save around 30 dollars with t-mo, but free Toronto and Montreal and... free texting fro Delta planes, Att has no free coverage there

Yes, but it doesn't change the fact that you still get the same fixed 700 standard minutes. Roll over happens when you've accumulated unused minutes over time.
Att gave me unlimited minutes on my 700 Family plan. No reason to count minutes, we should count money. :)
