This will def increase the resell value of ATT GSM iPhones.

Lots of people don't realize hundred of thousands of almost 3 year old iPhone 3GS being software unlocked and going to India and Brazil with iPad basebands.

This eliminates the need and you will have a true unlock iphone. Will be huge demand from third party resellers.

There a millions of iphones filtering into these developing countries.

Forgot all about this, you're 100% right.

That would be optimal, however many savvy persons such as yourself doing the same could result in a flooded market.

Very true, however, the market is always flooded with iPhones for sale when a new one is announced/released, regardless of this new turn of events.

The very first iPhone I sold in order to get the next one free of charge was my 3G. I wisely sold it 2 weeks before the WWDC announcement, and was able to maximize profit big time (I unlocked it with blackra1n, think I got 475 for it!).

But you know what I didn't count on? How much it would suck to not have an iPhone for a month, while waiting for the 3GS! I'm at a place in my life now that I don't "need" the $ I get from selling my old device to pay for the new one, so I've started selling it after launch day.

Point of this long winded post? I should now be able to get that extra chunk of loot I used to get when selling before the announcement, due to being able to unlock it.

And who doesn't love getting free accessories for your new toy ;)

This will really decrease the value of an unlocked iPhone:apple:

Perhaps you're right, however, maybe more people will want to buy from resale channels due to the fact that there will be more "officially" unlocked iPhones for sale, instead of software hacked unlocked iPhones?

What if the original owner is still under contract for that iphone that he sold on ebay or CL? Thus making the particular device associated with an active term commitment.
Weird how they will handle all these issues, we just gotta wait and see I guess.

This is a very interesting point. I would imagine this will happen A LOT, since iPhones have awesome resale value. Perhaps these sorts of issues will alow anyone to unlock whenever?

One can dream, right? :)

If anyone succeeds in getting an on-contract 4S unlocked, please share the magic words used to convince the rep to do it!

I've been with AT&T since 2005 and have paid for way more services than I've ever used, so it'd be nice if I could use that as leverage.

I plan on trying to get my on-contract 4S unlocked somehow come Sunday. We pay $200 a month for our family plan so hopefully that'll help.
