Not sure if sorta trolling, or not old enough to know.

One of the reasons computers had "turbo" buttons back in the day was because certain programs didn't run right at the faster clock speed. Particularly games. If you ran a game on a PC that expected a 5 MHZ clock speed and the PC was running at 7 MHZ, the game would be almost unplayable.

However, if you were calculating a spreadsheet or running some other processing "intensive" task, you would want it to run at the fastest speed possible.

My IIGS (hence the user name) even had a control panel setting to change the clock speed of the processor.

Running the IIe Version of "Castle Wolfenstein" at GS speeds was an interesting experience.
The explanation was not required, I was not trolling and I am old enough to know...

Wow, I’m lucky that in EU internet companies can’t sell services like this prioritising and deprioritising people data…
Some people prefer freedom of choice and the option to buy higher levels of service. Other people prefer mediocrity for everyone. Whenever the government gets involved, mediocrity, for everyone is usually the result. I’m not sure why anyone celebrates that. But you do you.

So let me get this straight. The company charges customers for services that it itself considers to be of insufficient quality, so it offers a paid upgrade to bypass its own shortcomings. Brilliant.

I think I'll rather wait few months for Apple Intelligence and avoid dealing with these kinds of business practices in Europe. SMH

Just to be clear, this isn't a cheap jab at US citizens, but rather a critique of the shameful business practices of certain corporations. I very naively hope that such practices either wouldn't pass at all or would at least be prevented by regulatory changes in the EU if some company tried this. It's not like we have it all sunshine and roses here either, however, consumer protection is one area where, as one of the few things, we tend to do ever so slightly better overall. Stay strong, my friends across the pond.
You completely mischaracterized them in your opening sentence, which makes the rest of your analysis of questionable value.

They provide a service that is good enough for most people. They offer options for additional levels of service for the people that want that.

Thank God, we live with the USA where we have the freedom to choose, rather than having forced mediocrity by the government.

Ah yes, Europe, the model of personal liberty.
Have you ever noticed how many people on here desire, embrace, and defend the lack of liberty that comes with excessive government overreach? Like, they’re proud of it. And they look down on people who prefer liberty. I don’t understand it.

I’m glad that AT&T gives us the option to choose the level of service that we want. I don’t need or want this turbo, so I don’t pay for it. Simple as that.

We’re outside the eu now, but EE in the UK recently launched network prioritisation, alongside restricting 5g-SA access so that they can sell that as an upgrade (bundled with top end plans)

How helpful is Turbo when you have one bar?
It doesn't improve your radio coverage. You get improved network prioritization during periods of congestion. If someone standing next to you also has one bar, and there is RAN congestion, the Turbo device will see better performance for applications like live video streaming (things that can't buffer).

to everyone on here saying the US telecom market is nuts, you may have a point, but dont miss the fact that because of business models, there is no other country that has a provider close to AT&T or Verizon with the advancements in their infrastructure.

you guys comment like their is infinite bandwith, and for those who say “ohh its not fair that some customers get deprioritized blah blah,” you guys don’t comprehend how many people shop at&t or verizon and say what rate plan or price point do you have for me? regular Joe that doesnt wanna pay for infinite high speed priority bandwith?

the different levels create options for those who dont want to pay to have the service, and as a telecom pro, id say a majority of customers want a more intro or limited unlimited plan option.

no you’re not. they either cant offer anything to the level of AT&T’s premium plan (which i assume is probably the case,) or your customers dont have $$$ options for someone who doesnt want to pay for infinite priority bandwith high speed data

It's really just like the car market. Chevy sells the Corvette Stingray, but also the Z06 and ZR1.

If you relate a lot of posters' opinions, they would tell Chevy "just make the Stingray as fast as the ZR1 because all customers should get your best engineering and performance".

I’ve always felt that having the carrier name there at all was dumb. Probably a concession from ca. 2006 to get Cingular on board as a launch partner.

The status bar doesn’t show your energy utility name when charging. It doesn’t show your WiFi network name either. Why should it constantly show your cellular carrier?

How far away are we from, when you open the faucet, a jingle “da-ding! Your H2O is brought to you in part by Thames Water. Thames Water! When it’s the 80s and you really need to ruin a country’s resources.”

What does this even mean? It’s either a concealed price hike, i.e. “we’ll artificially throttle your data unless you pay $7 more”, or it’s a net neutrality violation, in which case… how? Does it look at the host name you’re connecting to and, for those who don’t pay the $7, throttle Epic Games and Steam?
wrong, its an add-on for those who want to pay for the ability to run infinite high speed priority bandwith data, and gives the option to the many many us customers that want a more intro plan price rate to not HAVE to pay for that kind of rate plan or add-on.

the majority of us cell customers are not Macrumors members. theyre low tech IQ , “just calling and textin’,” people. and AT&T is doing their best to offer a wide range of options

It's wild that their least-limited unlimited plan still needs an additional subscription to be even less limited. At the same time I shouldn't be surprised - this is America.

Oh good. Another upsell. I'm itching for more. It's a bad itch. I need some cream.
fortunately you have the option to say no to it. me, on the other hand, who already runs about 120 gigs a month would love the option to get even closer to first net network share

There is no mediocrity there or need to pay more, as everyone goes to the fastest possible speed in any situation (unless you run out of data but that’s difficult having 100gb/month that accumulates). Paying more won’t improve the speed in a day to day situation, just keep you with the max available one as before this tiered system.
Maybe you will notice it in crowded areas, and still I doubt it will get any better with still having hundreds of phones negotiating with the antenna.

This is not a new practice.

I remember that ages ago you would be at Sears and some articles of clothing were labeled as "Our Good Quality", "Our Better Quality", or "Our Best Quality".

I actually found a Reddit thread on this subject.
Comparing tangible items to 0's and 1's is a bad analogy. Filet Mignon is better than Chuck Roast which is better than hamburger. Data is data and if I've been, ALL ALONG, paying for unlimited Prioritized 5G data, then did I just get a downgrade or why aren't I already getting their best product?

I’d pay to get rid of the carrier name, I’m surprised Apple has let carriers get away with it so long. iOS 19 no carrier name do it Apple.

There really needs to be a "truth in advertising" regulation that prohibits putting a "turbo" label on anything that doesn't have a turbine in it.

(Looking at YOU, Porsche.)
Not necessary, the internet and free speech is all the regulation needed. They were thoroughly roasted for that move, just like AT&T here and Toyota for calling the new Supra a Toyota instead of a BMW... We're smarter than that, and anyone who isn't, deserves what they get for failing to wise up.

You've been paying for "your data can't be slowed down based on how much you've used" purposely, by AT&T. But now you have the option to pay for moving ahead of the line when physical resources are constrained.

Not unlike traveling on a freeway that also has an adjacent toll lane. You can still go the 65mph speed limit in the regular lanes. If traffic gets congested, you can pay to use the toll lane. Those folks can also only go 65mph. But they might be moving faster than you if you're stuck in the regular lanes.
