Only Works for Out Of Contract

Everyone arguing about who get's special treatment or who sacrafices more can rest at ease. I have tried to have my iPhone unlocked with no success. Here is what I discussed with the online chat:

Allison: Thank you for contacting Business Data Support. My name is Allison. Before we begin, can I confirm the wireless number that we will be working with is xxxxxxxxxx?

You: xxxxxxxxxx

Allison: How can I help you today?

You: I was told that ATT was unlocking Military Members phones when overseas. I am still in contract but was told
it did not matter

Allison: I'll be more than happy to assist you, one moment please.
It has to be out of contract in order to unlock unfortunately.
I can check the contract date of the phone if you would like. Can I have the name on the account and the last 4 of the social security number please?

You: I found this information: http://some arbitrary site dot com
Is this incorrect then?

Allison: We can only unlock unless they are out of contract.

You: I am still under contract so this would not help since I will be overseas in a couple weeks

Allison: You can check with the military deployment department at 1-800-331-0500 but as of right now they have not changed our policy for military it has to be out of contract.

You: OK thank you

Allison: Do you have any questions regarding the information we discussed today?

You: Not at this time

WITH THAT SAID: THANKS TO ALL THE CIVILIANS WHO PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE DAILY ON THE HOMEFRONT AND THANK YOU, ALL OF MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN ARMS WHO ARE AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES, PLEASE BE SAFE AND COME HOME SAFELY.

EDITED: This is the second time I tried. The first time I informed them I was deploying and was asked "I do not understand what a deployment is?" and still was told I needed to be out of contract to unlock even after explaining what a deployment was.

Thanks for the update. ATT is doing the right thing by treating everyone as equals.

Great news, but untrue

I'm stationed in Afghanistan now. This would be great if it were true. I called AT&T and was told that they do not unlock iPhones for service members if the iPhone would otherwise be under contract, even if I am deployed.
