Just wanted to let everyone know that I was able to successfully able to get AT&T to credit me for the $40 activation fee by an online CSR named Fernando that was very emoji happy.

I'm not sure how easy/difficult this is if you're not on a FAN account, but I didn't even know if my FAN waived the fee, but I went to their online chat and put my issue as:

"I recently pre-ordered an iPhone 6 and there was a mandatory item for a $40 One Time Upgrade Fee listed on the bill. I was under the impression that my FAN discount waived that fee."

The chat is posted in the screenshots below:

I'm going to try. If they don't waive it, no big deal. I knew I was going to get charged going into it.

Even if the first CSR doesn't give it to you, try again. Last time I got turned down when I called immediately after per order. I called after a month when they actually billed it and a different CSR gave me $36 back.

OP is right. Most FAN discounts waive this. What Is BS however is that every year I have to call and tell them they were not supposed to charge me.

They are crooks for this bs.
I am sure that many do not catch it or don't even know, even though it is in the agreement.

Why would they do that? It's free money for tforthcoming those who don't notice, don't care or are too scared to contest a CSR.

Most FAN accounts never even get charged, if they are, its an easy call to get it waived. or just call retentions and they'll credit your account $40

Not all FAN accounts waive the fee. My dad's FAN waives it, mine does not. If the OP's FAN is supposed to waive it (as the transcript suggests) then of course there was no problem.

Nonetheless, last year I called/chatted until I found a rep that would give me a "one time" refund :roll eyes:

****

I think everyone should try to get the fee waived. No harm in trying. But I do think it will be harder this year, now that ATT lists waiving the fee as a key benefit to the NEXT program.

If they just waive $40 fees freely to contract plan customers, then it negates one key selling point to get folks on the NEXT plan. I have a feeling that chats/calls will heavily pressure folks onto NEXT if they complain about the $40 upgrade fee.

When I decide which plan works for me, I do the math on the contract plan vs NEXT (including all fees!) and I pick the one that suits me best.

You too, have a choice. Next or 2yr contract. Do the math and decide which plan is right for you. But fully expect ATT to stick to that $40 upgrade fee if you choose the contract (unless of course your particular FAN waives it)

Is there an easy way for me to check the perks of my FAN?

I know for a fact that my FAN discount used to include waived upgrade fees, but not the past few years as the fee hit my account. I just call or hit the chat and get it credited back.

What is a fan account?

From my many years of doing this, I have learned that they can't really waive the fee until a bill is generated with the fee on it. Has something changed? I don't even bother until the next bill comes.
