Last night I tried the apple reservation but did not go through it coz it asked me to ad data. I am doing this on the line that is eligible for upgrade but is a dumb phone. Once I get the ip5 I will want AT&T to link it to my number.

Can I not select the data plan? If I have to add data can I cancel after I get the upgrade swap to my number.

Will I loose my unlimited grandfathered plan. I don't want them to transfer the new data plan as well we they upgrade swap.

Just pick the lowest data plan.
When you have AT&T swap the numbers, they will cancel the data plan on the dumb phone and you'll keep unlimited on your iphone. I did the exact same thing and everything is fine.

I have read your post three times and NOT 100% sure what you are trying to do. Others will come here and answer a question that might be exactly what you are doing, or something different.

The problem is dumb phones need a different data plan than iphones, you would need to use a line that is either NEW, opened for this line, or add an iphone to the other number you are trying to use as your middle go between.

Basically it requires doing something like putting an iphone on your "dumb phone" line long enough to use the upgrade and do the data upgrade. Then you can swap back after you put the new phone on your line.

It may be easier to do in store as they (an AT&T store) can do more with your account. If you want to do it through you will not be able to do what you want without SOME iphone as that lines phone while you do the swap.

Just reserve the phone through Apple, pick the lowest data plan, ask them to do an upgrade swap and if they can't or you don't trust them, ask them if you can take it to AT&T yourself and get it done. I got mine upgrade swapped without any problems.
