if you upgrade to the 5, you're not grandfathered in anymore unless you buy the iPhone at full price. I bet not many people will do that.

I would be willing to bet a ton of people did that. Anyone with a brain upgrading to an i5 should have kept their unlimited unless they truly use less than 2gb

That might work if you have 1 line. My co worker who has 4 lines around Christmas uses upgrades as part of Christmas presents. At $200 each he was ok with it.

True. Also, unlimited is important if you have one phone. The shared plans are cheaper once you get into 3+ members.

You want to switch to VZW because of LTE?
It helps. But the better coverage, more reliable signal (I've had both AT&T and Verizon in the past, so I can say that with experience), included hotspotting, FaceTime over LTE/3G, and its more open compatibility in regard to international travel are also factors.

Currently locked in the middle of an AT&T contract, so not too sure what I want to do just yet. The ETF would be 200ish.

You could add cheaper data plans and rollover min to ATT as a good plus. Also ability to do earlier upgrades to new phone is a HUGE + to ATT as well. Signal is about same here in NJ, same dead spots for both, I am changing them for many years already. In general CDMA is dead technology and it is probably still exist because of Verizon :)

If you're not with VZW anymore you won't have unlimited. If you want FaceTime over LTE with AT&T then you'll have to switch to a tiered plan. So both AT&T would be the same.

As far as more reliable signal that depends on your area. In my area AT&T and VZW signal is the same.

I love my Verizon iPhone 5 with unlimited LTE (unthrottled) data. Verizon covers the majority of Southern California with 22MHz spectrum of LTE :)

Yeah, my original post said I was debating between leaving AT&T with unlimited data for Verizon (with tiered data).

I really don't need unlimited data. But it's all a pain regardless since I'm still in a contract. Oh weeelll, we'll see what happens.

Honestly I wouldn't call that AT&T truly unlimited data. What's the point of calling it unlimited if after 3-5 GB of data usage you get throttled to edge speeds.

you got me ****ed up you sound biased af! Verizon LTE blows AT&T's weak service out the water lololol

Last year I was debating leaving AT&T because I was getting sucked in the LTE hype.

I have 2 iphones with unlimited data and voice and I pay $150 / mo total.

Verizon (w/o unlimited) for same 2 phone is over $200.

You have to remember its not just signal but congestion. In Chicago "signal" is great on AT&T but congestion is chronic and therefore calls don't go through or call failed happens often.

Considered moving to Verizon since my new job gives me a stipend for my phone, but have three others in my family on a shared plan and they text...the three of them don't even use 200 mb a month ( one iPhone, two crap phones).

Since I already had the share plan, only costs me $45 to stay with AT&T and add my phone...a little more if I jump to 4gb rate. Will be tracking data are fully the first month, but usually on wifi most of the time.

Ugh. This was a tough situation for me. I've been on AT&T for the last 5 years. I pre-ordered the Vz phone, then cancelled and pre-ordered an AT&T phone, then cancelled that one and waiting in line and got a Vz on launch day.

Living in West LA, I can tell you that I dropped calls with AT&T constantly. I have not dropped a single call since the switch to Vz.

The only downside for me is the lack of simultaneous voice and data. For the few times a year that I need that, I can hang up the phone and dial back.

I am really happy with the switch to Vz.

What model iPhone did you have previously?

Here's a question to compare AT&T and VZW...

Unlimited data isn't available from both carriers unless you're grandfathered. With AT&T you can be grandfathered at subsidized pricing and with VZW you can be grandfathered buying at full retail.

AT&T throttles, VZW doesn't.

No FaceTime over cellular, VZW allows it

We have 4 line family plan each line with grandfathered unlimited data, mobile to ANY mobile, aList, 700 minute family plan.

We never been throttled although 3 lines in the family plan consistently goes over 3GB every month. I would be PO'ed if we got throttled down to where our iPhone would be crippled down to speeds where we couldn't stream etc. But that hasn't happened.

But the potential to be throttled is still there, right?

Those that have grandfathered unlimited data are in better position than those that can't get it.

However those that have grandfathered unlimited I would give the edge to VZW customers compared to AT&T because of non throttling on LTE. FaceTime over cellular? When my previous iPhone's were jailbroken I had the FaceTime over 3G app and never used it.

I just returned my new Verizon iPhone 5 because of poor reception where we live out in the woods. AT&T iPhone has 4-5 bars and 4G here while the Verizon was receiving 0-2 bars and on 3G.

Now I just have to wait for our local AT&T store to get in some 64GB's in black
