I want to wait in lime at an AT&T store but I'm not sure if they usually carry the 64GB models...

I have never had an issue getting on an launch day at an ATT store.

I went to ATT for the 3GS and 4S. For the 3GS, I walked up at 9AM and put my name on a waiting list and stood inside the store waiting. The called me up in 15 minutes. 30 minutes later I walked out with a 32GB 3GS. Seems like the largest size never sells as fast as the smaller ones.

I preordered the iPhone 4 on Apple's site.

For the iPhone 4S, I wasn't sure I was going to upgrade. I went to an ATT store in teh afternoon on launch day to check it out. Walked in and didn't even have to wait. Walked out with a 64GB 4S in 15 minutes.

doing a "black friday" prep and might get there 10 pm thursday night. Hopefully i don't look ridiculous sitting out there that early, but i NEED this iphone especially after i sell my currently using iphone 4s today -_-

I am planning to stand in line around 4 AM in front a nearby AT&T store to get the iPhone 5 on 09/21. How was the crowd like in front of AT&T stores for 4S launch? Do you guys think 4 AM would be early enough?

BTW, I stood in line in front of Apple store around 4:30 AM on launch day for iPhone 4 and there were 100+ guys in front of me. I would prefer to not wait in front of Apple store this time around.

My AT&T store opened at 8AM. I got to the line at 7:45AM. I got a 4S as did the 100 or so people behind me that I know of (a friend was about 100 people behind me) and I'm sure people behind him got one.

I think this will be a little busier, but you have to remember this isn't like the 3G & 4 launch where you only had one carrier - you have the userbase split among 3 different carriers.

I kind of think you could probably arrive at 6am and be fine.

I was originally planning on camping out at an Apple Store for several hours, but I think that going to an AT&T store would make more sense, especially since there's about 5 of them within 10 minutes of me. I've never pre-ordered anything before, let alone buy something on launch day.

Would going at 5AM be safe? Too early? Not early enough?

people keep saying things will be better now because there are 3 carriers. but, wouldn't that just mean that each store will get a smaller inventory for launch, most likely? so, maybe there will be less people at each store, but that doesn't improve your chances of getting one.

I went in at 12:30PM on launch day and picked up my 4S, they still had some in stock until about 3:00PM that day but eventually sold out. I didnt have to wait in line more then 10 minutes total. This was after canceling my preorder because the delivery date wouldnt be for 2 weeks later. And this was in San Antonio at an AT&T store...

There are a number of factors that will answer your question.

# of phones produced

# of phone preordered (those folks will generally not be at the store)

# of people that still want a phone, NOW!

# of people that want it on the same carrier as you

# of phones each store will get vs # of people that will show up

the factor in all the outlets to buy them....

Since nobody here knows the answer to these questions, how in the world could you even guess. Okay, if you knew a certain store was getting ZERO phones, that would be easy.

Heck, even the folks at Apple that know how many phones exist. They still could not figure it out, since NOBODY knows what the remaining first day demand is.

Sure 2 million were sold already. Does that mean the demand is higher, or that more people did preorders vs going into the store?

I will put good money that some people will walk into a store at noon and have no problem. And some will stand in line at 7am and get nothing.

For what it's worth, my local AT&T corporate store couldn't/wouldn't tell me how many they would get but to expect long lines. I talked to Cellular World (AT&T retail store) and they said they would be getting 3-5.
This is Wichita Falls. Not many options.

So AT&T store chances seem pretty good, then. Definitely taking that route.

I won't be able to go to a store until late in the afternoon. Do you think there will still be some available? What about the weekend? Anyone have any experience in the past with this?

Depends on the store...likely only the more expensive models if there are any left.

Your answers will easily range from a few minutes to a few days for the last time around.

Will vary across the country. Even from one side of town to the other.

Factors include how many preordered this time vs going to store. How many still want them. Add in outlets like Best Buy, Radio Shack, Sams, Walmart, Radio Shack and the possibilities are endless.

This is sooo true, I work in the financial district in down town SF walking minutes within six different spots of stores that released the iphone, apple store included. For the 4 and the 4S the Apple store had a line wrapped around the corner at 5:30 am, two ATT stores close to Apple store had pre-order only signs on the door, Radioshack only had three phones shipped to them.
The At&t store accross the street from my bldg had only 15 people in front of me once I got in line. The woman came out took each of our names and told us that we were sure to get the phone of our choice. After 20min everyone in front of me including myself got the phone of our choice. Totally different situations with each location all within minutes of each other...crazy.

I plan on going around 9:00P.M. on Thursday to the AT&T store. Reason being, the due to my Harley Owners Group discount I can only upgrade at AT&T store.

My question is, if by chance they don't have enough 16GB Black, would they let you get whatever they have available and from there return when stock is back up?

I guess I should've posted this, but I went out and cruised around to various stores (Apple Store, AT&T Stores, Verizon Stores, Sprint Stores) at about 2AM, and the Apple Store had about 80 people in line, while the Verizon and Sprint stores had nobody. One of the three AT&T stores that I went by was empty, while the other 2 had about 3-5 people in line. By 8AM, the line for the store that I was in grew to just about 25 people. Everyone got what they wanted, I believe. It looked like they had plenty of iPhones.
