Doesn't even have to do with 911 that has all been sorted for some time. The hold up is the FCC requires TTY for deaf and hard of hearing. Which is an old protocol, AT&T built their wifi calling using RTT which is real time and doesn't have the delay like TTY. The FCC currently only allows TTY, AT&T needs a waiver to use RTT so they are not in violation of an FCC rule.
actually it is specifically this issue with TTY vs. RTT that has not been resolved or approved and how that impacts the ability for TTY users to reach 911 and E911 implementation. The FCC's primary concern over this is the reliability of a TTY user to be able to reach 911/E911 without fail regardless of the network they are connected to.. cellular or WIFI.

Which is fine. Except ATT should have asked for this waiver months ago.

Heck they announced way back in fall 2014 that wifi calling would be coming in "2015".

They could have requested waiver a long time ago. My impression is that ATT didn't ask for a waiver until probably ios9 beta was announced.

Very interesting ... on my AT&T account with UDP (personal phone), I get "Wi-Fi Calling: To allow Wi-Fi calling on this account, contact your carrier". On my AT&T work account (which is a data plan + all features added), I get the "Wi-Fi calling is not yet available. It will be coming soon." So, looks like WiFi calling will be secluded to only Shared Value Data plans.

While I don't know anything more than anyone else, I have UDP and it tells me "Wi-Fi Calling is not yet available. It will be coming soon". Nothing about contacting my carrier. So I'm not sure that's necessarily an indicator that Wi-Fi calling will only be on Shared Value Data plans.

Nothing for me yet. I dream about getting rid of my Microcell which causes a lot of issues with MMS.

Oh god, the microcell. Necessary expensive pieces of garbage they are. I had to pay $150 for one a year ago because the rep wouldn't give me a discount even though they told me tons of other people in my area had one as well. Afterwards I kept reading about people getting them for free. I think I might call them and see what they say about a credit even though it's been a year LOL

Yeah I got mine for free, didn't even have to haggle with them. I get a questionable single bar of signal in my house and it has helped me greatly. I have all kinds of issues with MMS and even text messages, delayed messages, refuses to send MMS at times, etc. It's also a major pain into that my GPS doesn't work until I'm several blocks away from my house because it still thinks it's connected to the Microcell.

I can't wait to get rid of it, I'll probably smash it with a bat like in Office space.

We are new customers of ATT. Verizon cell signal was so poor. ATT signal is also so poor. Got the ATT microcell with a rebate. We tested our new 6s iPhones today on the microcell. Half the calls did not go through. A pop up came up from the iPhone UI telling us to try the WiFi calling. I tried it but of course it could not be enabled. I don't have the beta. When the calls did go through, the sound quality was mush, Our facetime audio calls over WiFi were perfect. I want WiFi calling or I will go back to Verizon. Also, I just heard from our HOA that Verizon will be putting a new cell tower on top of the hillside in front of us. Right in front of us.

You would be better off with a Wilson/Webmo cellular amp and external antenna cause Mircrocells are junk

It actually is very good in terms of reception, turned a very very iffy single bar into a full signal and in 2 years I've never dropped a call. It causes headaches with other stuff like I mentioned, but reception it's pretty darn nice.

AppleCaked, give it a little while. Firmware updates are slow to catch up after initial activation, but it will eventually get there and will not give you any problems. I rarely get failed/dropped calls from my MicroCell. Key is to get the MAC address from the MicroCell and set it in the DMZ zone of your router (you may have to assign it a reserved IP to get it to work).

I'll say, I've had a microcell at the house (for free) for about four years now and have not had any of these issues. no problem with texts, no problem with gps. only problem is the handoff. It will LEAVE the microcell and switch to a tower if calling from within the mcell range and then leaving the home and going out into the cellular world, but it will NOT transfer properly FROM The cellular world TO the mcell. But, I don't think it is designed for that actually.

I have not really used MMS often, but pictures with imessages and texts go out fine.

I made my first wifi call this morning. It seemed to work fine. I haven't actually held a conversation yet but I got through to someone's voicemail. One thing I noticed is it took forever for the call to originate. I wonder if I will miss a lot of calls because when people call me, it takes forever to start ringing on my end? With Verizon, when the caller heard the first ring, I got a ring. On At&t I've noticed that when the caller hears a ring, it has nothing to do with when I might hear the first ring. I suspect this might get even worse with wifi calling, especially if an incoming wifi call is my first call since going airplane mode and turning wifi back on.

Wifi calling is flaky on some hospital based secured wifi systems.

I couldn't get wifi icon until I switched to a different wifi network (hospital has 3-4 different layers of wifi security protocol).
