I think that arn should add "neutral" or "don't care" rating in addition to positive and negative. Personaly, I do not really care about iPhone or iPod news posted on MR. It would also be a good way to test how relevant posted news are to the audience.

...If you don't care about iPhone news, then why did you post to an iPhone thread? That's sort of contradictry.

you know it just hit me and maybe I missed it but did anyone remember seeing an exposed sim slot?

just thinking about those of us that have 2 or 3 phones...

(I know, I know....but at least I'm not complaining about the price. Now....the no 3g on the otherhand....)

and yes the other phones have it

Yeah really. WHo the hell cares that a single device is going to drive the entire industry to be more innovative. Who cares that a $500 cell phone is gonna sell by the boatloads. Who cares that this is going to be yet another market dominated by Apple. I'm gonna stick my head back up my ass so I don't have to hear about successful Apple products on an Apple enthusiast site.

But who would want to buy this to use it simply as an iPod? Yes, widescreen is cool, but the storage is embarrasingly tiny. You'll basically be paying 100$ per gig. That's outrageous. Video iPod with 4 gigs of ram?

As soon as they get 100gigs in this thing I'll consider it. 4 gigs (minus all the hd space for OS X, apps, widgets, music, etc) will leave the phone pointless for video. It's more of a show off toy for now. It's like a Bentley with no gas tank.

It's a phone...

4GB is NOT embarrassingly tiny for a phone. And you're not paying $100/GB. It's not a hard drive, or a flash drive. It's a phone with a sh**load of features that are actually useful inside.

Apple Store vs. AT&T Store?

but you will need a contract to use the phone part of the iPhone

My question is whether Apple will be offering these AT&T plans in their OWN stores? Will we be signing AT&T contracts at the Apple cash registers?

OR, if I buy iPhone at an Apple Store, will I then be forced to go to an AT&T Store to sign up for a plan? Surely not, as that seems much more user-UNfriendly than anything Apple would allow. Still, won't it be a bit weird for Apple to have an AT&T "store-within-a-store" to deal with plan sign-ups?

My guess is that maybe there will be very little (or no) plan choice, and this will all be much more automatic than cellular transactions have been in the past.

Pay Data As You Go?

I wonder if you can still use data features, and if you don't have a plan you'd pay by the byte transferred. That's how it is for me on my Moto RAzr V3 Black, though I try not to use it. I'd think for some people this would be the best option. They might not be able to afford $20 a month additional for the occasional Google Maps look up, or the occasional weather or sports score look up.

Amen. I agree wholeheartedly.

Indeed. That's the point I was trying to make with the dude who posted saying he doesn't care about iPhone/iPod news, yet he posted to a thread about the iPhone, which is also an iPod. That post is at the top of page 2.

I'm still amazed that the phone will only be running on an Edge network. Apple is touting the first full-feature browser on a cell phone and then crippling it with a slow connection. The EDGE network was really nice when it came out, but then got leapfrogged by Verizon's EVDO network. I'm hoping Apple has some secrets up its sleeve about the iPhones internet connection. Give us WWAN and WLAN!!! Come on!

If Apple had any secrets about the iPhone's internet connection, it would have come out in the FCC filings.

If I can get free internet via WiFi..I'm game then.

Might be X'mas before I buy though.

I'm currently spending $77 something monthly with Cingular now.

Jesus Christ, will you LET IT GO. Apple went to Verizon first, and Verizon wouldn't play ball. So they went to the 2nd largest wireless network. What the hell is do hard to understand about this deal?

It's a first generation product? What do you expect? lol. Plus, 3G isn't everywhere yet. As far as I've seen 3G is only in big cities like New York or Boston.

I think someone needs a timeout. lol. He was meerly stating his amazement. He wasn't complaining at all. I for one am happy that they're on ATT/Cingular. I've never liked the phones Verizon's offered/crippled.

By the way, back to the original interview...

It seems very casual and rushed, and the guy was searching for words. Since he worded much of it so clumsily I wouldn't analyze too much his use of "have to", "unlimited", etc. He was freestyling it so it may not translate into actual AT&T plans and terms at all.

if you can afford $500 on a phone, you can afford a expensive plan.

i dont think this will be as mainstream as they think.

I will afford an iPhone because I will save up, but it doesn't mean I can afford an expensive Plan, I think it will be mainstream because who would have thought someone would pay £300 for an iPod, but Millions upon Millions did.

that sounds as if you will be able to buy the iPhone without an AT&T contract and then use it for just the other functions (iPod, wifi etc..) but you will need a contract to use the phone part of the iPhone (calling and non-wifi internet) thus the phone part will only work with AT&T? Good for us Europeans who want it for all the extra non-phone features :p

sounds to me as you will need an AT&T plan, not specifically unlimited (he says "a plan with us")?

Yep, can't wait for it to be available in Europe...and I hope Sunrise gets to offer it here in Switzerland...then I will surely step up my subscription and buy an iPhone at once..! :D

I think it will appear on Swisscom first. Apple seems to care about going with the largest carrier, and here in Switzerland, i would peg that as Swisscom.

Also, they are owned by Vodafone, who i feel will be carrying the iPhone in Germany, etc.

That's nice. There's no Verizon EV-DO coverage where I live, but EDGE works just fine. That's the general problem Apple will be facing with any network: they'll want their phone features to work across the service areas where they offer them. This is a recurring theme with apple, they typically adopt the latest and greatest as soon as it's practical for most of their customers, but rarely sooner.
