For all you retro gamers out there, Atari's Greatest Hits app for iPad/iPhone is now available in the App Store! It features 100 classic Atari arcade and 2600 console games. The app itself is free and includes Pong. To get the rest of the games, you can either purchase 99-cent game 4-packs within the app, or get all 100 games at once for $14.99. I opted for the later and bought all 100games for my iPad 2. Man is this app bringing back childhood memories!! These are faithful reproductions of all the classic Atari games I used to play at the arcade and 2600 console. I only wish they had included some of my other favorite non-Atari 2600 games like Pitfall. I'll need to get used to the touchscreen controls. Would be nice to have a real joystick to plug into the iPad.

I saw mentioned on ARS and I cannot believe it. My dilemma, do I buy it for my iPad or for the iPhone. I want to try one, to see how it works, control wise and then buy the lot for 15 bucks.

The iPhone apps would be more useful for me as I have my iPhone all the time, but the small screen may not great.

Edit:
I just one game and I can play it on my iPad or my iPhone. The controls seem a tad overly sensitive but I like how they implemented it. It plays much better (duh) on the larger iPad screen

I agree - even Pong feels better on iPad.

Ah, nostalgia. They're not going to suck me in for 15 bucks on games that will suck after 5 minutes of nostalgia.

That said, I must have Missile Command. :D

EDIT: And Asteroids. :D

Not for me, I was an atari addict back in the day, so for 15 bucks, I'll enjoy this for a long time.

The only thing that seems to be missing from the collection is space invaders :(

Funny thing is while I was really addicted to the atari 2600 as a kid, I have little desire to play video games now. I picked up a PS3 a couple of years ago because it was the cheapest blu-ray player. I have a handful of games but they go largely untouched.

I also have a wii for my kids but I can't remember the last time I played that.

Wow. This brings back memories. No Space Invaders seems like a huge omission. I wonder what todays' generation will make of it?

I don't know why they omit, but they've released these games as a windows game or as a console (in the form of a retro atari controller) yet they never include space invaders.

Space Invaders was by Midway in the states

I have been passing the iPad around at parties and the like, this will simply be another game(s) that will keep it out of my hands till I go home.

Slice HD has been the biggest hit so far of games I downloaded. Yet I think this will get quite a few of my old school buddies. As long as they don't try to shove quarters into the dock connector I will be fine

Now if I can just get my hands on Star Castle from Cinematronics.. Life would be complete :)

Downloaded...

My God, I'm playing Pong on my iPhone....

It's sort of like owning an XBox 360 and using it to play Joust...

;)

Space Invaders was by Midway in the states

Distributed by - Taito makes the game and releases the originals now (for the consoles/handhelds)

Hope they continue to add games to this, I could use Xevious please :p

That would be Namco...

I'm going buy this - we need to make it clear that we WANT this sort of thing...

The only thing is that Midway is in "limbo" last I heard so all their games, Joust, Robotron, etc., are nowhere AFA new releases...

The Midway Games retro packs for older systems are starting to become collector's items - especially the GameCube version since you can play it on a Wii...

Know you're joking but it depends on your graphics vs. gameplay viewpoint. Personally I favor gameplay, but know many many folks buying essentially the same game on PS3/X360 as the previous version on PS2/XBOX and raving about 'great new revolutionary version' ... which of course means more eye candy. Yawn.

Halo is just an "updated" Wolfenstein...

;)

Marathon = awesomeness, I think I still have that CIB (Complete-In-Box).

I remember when they announced this awesome new Marathon-Like Mac game, called "Halo"...

Then, Microsoft bought Bungie...

The rest is history. ;)

Ah well ... back to playing Tempest on an iPad 2 ... ;)
