Thinking of buying an MBA and a thunderbolt display and I was wondering if you can turn the MBA on/off while keeping it closed in clamshell mode with the apple display?

TLDR: Are you able to power on and off a macbook that's hooked up from the display controls of the ATD?

There aren't any controls on the TB Display itself, but since you want to use your MBA with the TB display as a monitor, i'm assuming you have an external keyboard/mouse? If so, your MBA/display will wake up when you move your input devices (i.e. keyboard/mouse).

There might be some issue with fan noise from the display though. Might wanna check that out before committing.

In a word, no. But as crumpler pointed out, sleeping your MBA and waking it up with external peripherals is the best option. This is what I do with my MBP and external monitor setup.

BTW, useful shortcut for this setup, Command+Option+Eject puts your Mac to sleep. This has become second nature to me :)
