It's strange that the iTunes Store does not have any mention of Dolby Atmos! There are 4K banners, promotions on the home page and mentions of Apple TV 4K but no mention as yet of Atmos!

Yeah, you think they would be promoting it. Maybe they want to wait a week or two to make sure there aren’t any major issues with the public release.

So, I've got a Sony projector which only supports 1080p but I have an AV surround system which supports Dolby Atmos (it would also support HDR and Dolby Vision passthrough) will the ATV allow me to listen to the audio in Atmos but play the content in 1080p. Currently I'm not getting the Atmos option it's just setting everything to the 1080p resolution.

Any advice is really appreciated.

Do you have a Apple TV 4K or another ATV?

I’m not sure if the HD versions of the films still have the Atmos track but I do know it’s only enabled on the ATV 4K.

If you do have an ATV 4K, you could try one of the movies that has Atmos but only has an HD version. Gravity is one I know that does.

Yes it's the ATV 4k gen 5, all updated and I can see the audio option for Dolby Atmos. What I'm wondering if is Apple has bundled both the sound and the vision together making an assumption that anyone wanting to listen to Dolby Atmos is only doing so through a 4k tv? Just a thought as I think it's downsampling to DD+ when it sees the 1080p projector?

Theoritically yes, I have a similiar setup with a 1080p projector and an Atmos capable receiver. If you are on apple tv 4k and TVOS12 you will have the enable atmos option under audio options. My problem is my receiver is not taking the ATV4K audio stream with Atmos enabled but the video plays fine at 1080p.

Do either of you own the movie Gravity? It’s HD with Atmos. Curious if that would work for you.

I have Gravity will give that a try tonight but Im pretty sure its a problem with the sound stream that my receiver wont decode. When I enable Atmos the video starts but no audio its playing a 1080p file with Atmos sound.

this may sound silly, but, try disconnecting your HDMI cables and reconnecting...when you connect each device has EDID information that tells other devices what it is capable of, when doing a software/firmware update HDMI can be finicky and might not update EDID very well.

Tried that, also moved it to another input I have had HDMI finicky issues but those steps have always resolved them. :(

ALSO: tvOS 12 decodes DD+ Atmos stream, mixes system sounds, then outputs LPCM uncompressed w/Dolby MAP2.0 metadata for Atmos, this is different from most other devices out there. I assume any audio device that can decode Atmos is able to do so with LPCM / Dolby MAP2.0, but you may need to check your device manual and/or settings?

See pg 12 here: https://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/dolby-atmos/dolby-atmos-for-the-home-theater.pdf
I think that is the question, I have completely reread the manual and scoured the interweb but I have no idea.

I do know that the Xbox Dolby Atmos stream decodes fine but I do not know what format they are sending out.

I see there is a firmware update that came out Sept. 5th., do you have the latest firmware?

Is your ATV audio output set to HDMI If not, and set to your AVR, you will be airplaying to the AVR, which will not pass Atmos.

here is Apple Support page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204069

(...I'm still looking for things, back soon...)

Gravity in Atmos worked for me in the beta so I assume it still works.

Yeah, it still works. I just wondered if it would play Atmos for those having the issue with a 1080p TV and their receivers since it is HD and not 4K.

I'm sure you know this already but you can use Siri in Atv 4k and search: show me all movies with don't Dolby Atmos. I'd use flatpanel's sitehttps://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1505495519
[doublepost=1537309740][/doublepost]I think it sounds pretty damn good using my LG SJ9 soundbar. Bit I'm thinking I may have to upgrade. This last quarter is gonna cost me a small fortune
