I guess the minute that they can offer iTunes films in Atmos. Maybe at the same time as the HomePod as everything Apple does tend to integrate and compliment each other so... maybe early 2018! Exciting times. What an incredible year 2017 has been for Apple. Pretty outstanding i'd say :)

2019, at earliest. Why?

#1. Atmos is new, with a relatively small user base. Apple takes it's time with new standards, unless they feel it will help move a lot of new hardware.

#2. By removing audio passthrough on the ATV, I worry Apple may have painted themselves into a corner. Now they'll have to pour R&D into transcoding the Atmos audio into PCM, versus simply passing the Atmos stream onto the AVR.

Just a guess, though...

No way. This industry is damn fast moving!!! There's no way Apple will waste another year. ATV 4K is their baby. They are incredibly proud with it. Plus have you seen the thousands of talented staff they have? 12,000 just in the new campus!!! Atmos is standard in LG TVs, sounders are appearing everywhere. 2018 CES is the TV game changer with HDMI2.1. It's in Apple best interest to get Atmos in ATV ASAP as they want it to be the best of the streaming units. There's a hell of a lot of young, dynamic millennials at Apple. They were born into this tech. They'll have it sorted very very very soon! iTunes is by far the leader in streaming for 4K DV picture quality, of course, it's now 1000000000% vital that they get the sound sorted. They simply cannot wait ONE year - that's like waiting 50 years+ in any other industry.

I hear you. Personally, I would be happy with Apple dropping their internal transcoding and just offering audio pass-through of all digital signals. Total win-win scenario as Apple could avoid ongoing R&D efforts to keep up with audio formats, and (most importantly!) customers get a 100% "pure" Dolby signal (Atmos or otherwise).

I truly aware. But, you know Apple - they do things their own way. In usually, it works out perfect but probably not in this case :) I have a lot of faith in ATV and finally, Apple seem to have now so... anything is possible :) Exciting times for ATV. It's truly been a fantastic year for it along with iTunes 4K DV. Let's see what 2018 brings to the table :)
