I currently am on ATT Next with Mobile Share Value 7gb Promo with Rollover Data. 3 iphones. My 6s Plus is on Next with about 200.00 left to pay off. Other 2 iphones are paid for.

I would like a 7 Plus sim free with the Qualcomm modem. Apple can not add that iphone to my Next program. ATT blocks it according to Apple employee.

I was thinking I could pay off my ATT iPhone on Next, sell it and get the 7 Plus sim free on IUP and finance with Apple.

Does anyone know if that would affect my ATT Plan and change my payments at all. I am on a Military discount plan with 15.00 off the 40.00 line fee for each iphone. They may charge me an activation fee.

Was hoping someone here might have first hand knowledge on this. You never seem to get the same answer from customer service reps. For example, an ATT rep at an ATT Store said I could get the sim free iphone and add to my Next program no change to my payment plan. Apple rep said I can't. Just want to be sure before doing this.

Will using this sim free iphone on ATT affect my HD Voice and Wifi Calling?

If this is in the wrong Forum, please move Mods--

Thanks for any advice--

Guess I could get the Verizon model. Any input on my other questions.

If you have an ATT account they are going to give you the ATT/T-Mobile model. Short of opening a new Verizon account and then cancelling it to get the phone I don't think you have much option aside from the full retail route if you don't want the ATT/T-Mo model.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Also your HD calling and WiFi calling should still be fine.

Thanks

You cannot get a Verizon model on AT&T. You can only get the phone for your carrier. They verify your phone number/account so they can activate it to the new SIM card.

Thanks

The Apple Rep said something about going IUP. Thought I could buy it that way then take it to att and put on my account. Guess not.

Was in a similar situation. Apple will not let you purchase a SIM-free iPhone on the IUP program, they are cash and carry only. I paid off my 6S+ on ATT and went down to the Apple Store and bought my 128GB SIM-free 7+ cash. Didn't want to deal with trying to sell my old phone on craigslist so the Apple employee first had to receive my old phone as a trade in, and then purchase the new phone on the same transaction. She said if she added the new phone first on the transaction, I'd only be able to receive payment for the old phone in the form of a gift card. After the transaction was completed, all she did was pop the sim out of my old phone and stick it in the new one. All I had to do was restore my backup from home and everything was great since.

SIM free iPhone 7/7+ CAN be financed on IUP, I can guarantee you that
it needs to be activated with a carrier SIM card as a post paid activation
if they are you telling you otherwise, they don't know what they're doing

Didn't know they would take in the 6 toward the 7. I bought mine at ATT so don't know if they take it in. Was going to sell on MR Marketplace if someone on there is from my area. Maybe I will go back to Apple after the holidays.

This is my experience. I initially asked the Apple rep for a SIM free iPhone 7 Plus 128GB and he got it ready for me to pay, but I had told him I was interested in the IUP. He said that I would have to sign up with carrier, and cannot just get the SIM free model. I said I wanted to go through with it, so he brought an ATT SIM and we started the process.

I expected him to return the phone and bring out a ATT model, but he did not. He scanned the phone and the new SIM, and swapped the SIM in my current 6S so I could bring the 7 Plus back with me sealed to have wrapped for Christmas (my brother's gift to me).

My 6S is still on 2yr contract through ATT for one more year, and I was allowed to keep my current plan unaffected by the upgrade with the 24% discount I have with my employer and no upgrade fee. OP, you should have no problem getting the new phone SIM free, but I don't know about a different carrier's model.

Thanks Charades, that is exactly what I want to do. IUP with sim free iPhone on ATT. I can buy outright, but would prefer not.

Don't count on them allowing that to happen. That is not policy and was clearly an exception made for that person.

this is what I was assuming but when messaging with the Apple person on the Apple website they stated that if you use the IUP and have T-Mobile or AT&T you're stuck with the GSM phone. This made no sense to me as the website on Apple differs from this persons statement. I'm glad to hear that you had a different experience. Based on the Apple website stating that one needs to choose a carrier to get started and then on is free to choose whatever carrier they want after that, I was assuming that the phone given for the program would be The iPhone 7m odel number a 1660 or the iPhone 7 Plus model number a 1661 . I am going to go to the Apple Store tomorrow to figure this out.

Let us know. The iPhones are more plentiful now. I may try IUP route if you have any luck. Want a Matt 256gb Plus. Sim free of course.

Ok. I'll post back tomorrow late afternoon early evening after I get to the store. Here's hoping that if you are part of the IUP that you get the tool radio phone is CDMA plus GSM. If one didn't then the advertisements on the Apple website is wrong In that it states:

When you buy an iPhone with the iPhone Upgrade Program, you aren’t tied to a single carrier and a multiyear service contract. So you can choose the carrier that’s right for you. And once your new iPhone is activated with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon, you can switch carriers whenever you like.

But it also states:
What happens to my carrier plan when I upgrade?
You can select a new wireless carrier or keep the one you have. We’ll activate your iPhone on your choice of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon Wireless. And you can use it with other carriers in the future. However, there are wireless network compatibility differences between an iPhone for AT&T or T-Mobile and an iPhone for Sprint or Verizon Wireless.

Ugh. This sucks if one can't really get a phone that can Ben used with any carrier.

I prefer not to to buy outright either because I want an iPhone now and want the option of getting the 8 if I like it without spending time on Swappa or a craigslist.

No go at the Apple store. Those with T-Mobile and At&T wanting IUP will get only a GSM iPhones. Apple Store employee acknowledge that this year due to the Qualcomm versus Intel chips that has been a problem. Here's hoping that next year all the phones will be the same again. Those who were able to get the Qualcomm and have it activated with T-Mobile or AT&T are the exception. Bummer. I may just go with the program anyways and hope that next year's phones will have both CDMA and GSM like the 6s has.

Sorry to hear that. I may just have to buy outright or wait for the 8 and see what modems are in them. How much of an issue this in real world is debatable. I need the best one for business appointments in outlying areas. Funny though, my son was in over the weekend and his 7 on att and same wifi network as me was downloading much faster. Signal strength was 2 to 3 bars on both. They were side by side. It all may mean nothing.

It all may mean nothing.

True. For me the issue is the fact that one is not totally free to change to any of the big four carriers if their phone is activated on IUP with Tmobile or AT&T. For example, if one starts with Tmobile or AT&T and moves or if their work changes cell providers from a GSM privider to a CDMA one, then one is out of luck.

Agreed. I don't see why IUP should matter. Pretty sure I am waiting on the 8. Or if I don't like it, Get a good price on a 7 Plus at that time. These phones do much more than I need on a daily basis.

Hey all. Went to a different Applease Store today and guess what? They said if I am on Tmobile and want a SIM Free phone with Qualcomm (A1661) with IUP, then they would just put a Tmobile sim inside from the store and activate it. I told them the problem I had and they said that they never heard of that and of course they would give a SIM Free version as part of IUP program. Crazy. Now I know the store to go to.

Nice! I think with what we're going through on IUP, throwing in AppleCare+ and taking the hard pull on our reports, all the phones should be the SIM free version.

I got one through IUP, as an AT&T user, but when I tested with Sprint and Verizon SIMs, it just shows "No Service" on top while my unlocked iPhone 5S shows carrier name for both SIMs (and my AT&T SIM). Is there something I'm doing wrong? I selected Update when it asked if I wanted to update carrier settings for both CDMA carriers on the 7 Plus....

What model number is your 7 plus? A1784 or A1661?

It is A1661, model MN4D2LL/A. This should be the CDMA/GSM model, shouldn't it?
