I was really hoping there would be one universal version this year like there was with the 6S, but once again there are going to be two models of the iPhone X, one with a CDMA modem and one without.

This means that if you get the ATT or T-Mobile versions, you won't be able to switch your carrier to Verizon or Sprint. Also, the iPhones with CDMA typically use Qualcomm modems and have better performance.

1. Wrong. The Intel iPhone works on Verizon, albeit without some roaming coverage and a few random towers in the middle of nowhere that are still running on CDMA 1x.

2. Yes, the performance difference is an unfortunate result of Apple's petty little war with Qualcomm.

Not quite a petty war. It’s over big money unless you like a company with a monopoly screwing over others just because they can. Apple isn’t the only company screaming either.

It's completely ridiculous. Samsung, Motorola, and others get along with Qualcomm just fine, but Apple declares war on them and ends up screwing all their customers over in the process. Now the iPhone is year behind in wireless technology, and half of the iPhones have lousy Intel chips in them because Apple is trying to stick it to Intel in a petty little game.

I have an issue with true monopolies, but in this case, how about another company go out and do the research and build better chips? Qualcomm just makes better performing chips. They did 5 years ago when Apple went from Infineon in the iPhone 4 to Qualcomm in the 4s, and it had far better performance, and they still do today. Nobody else is making good chips, so Apple should just use all Qualcomm chips, as they make the best chips out there.

Samsung gets along so well with Qualcomm that they created a modem/chip that works in every single other country other then the US and Japan. Qualcomm actually prevents Samsung from selling that chip to any competitor. The US, China and Europe all are suing Qualcomm for FRAND infringements. Qualcomm doesn’t have the legal right to charge what they charge. They get away with that because they are the only manufacturer who can use the outdated technology called CDMA. Habe fun kissing to companies who believe it’s okay to screw over others just because they can. It’s okay fo Samsung to use outdated Qualcomm modems in their US models too right. Motorola has zero choice at all along with every single other manufacturer who wants to sell phones on crappy Verizon and Sprint.

You are saying Verizon will activate and allow such a device on their plans?

They're not using Intel chips in their phones in the US. I thought the Exynos phones still used Qualcomm radios? I'm not sure on that one though...

It doesn't have that much to do with CDMA, as CDMA is basically dead. Verizon sells devices without CDMA, Sprint is the last hold out that relies on CDMA for voice, and is a lousy market for a phone manufacturer anyway. It has to do with the fact that no one else makes good chips. Qualcomm is the only company that has actually put the R&D forward to make good chips that actually work well. Some of their practices are a bit sketchy, sure, and let them work it out in the courts, but Apple shouldn't be screwing it's customers over in the meantime by shipping inferior Intel radios and not using Qualcomm Gigabit LTE.

You are saying Verizon will activate and allow such a device on their plans?

Yes. They have let Intel iPhone 7's on their network. No reason to disallow them. They're no different from some certified Verizon compatible Unlocked or Verizon branded devices that don't have CDMA radios.

And 7 and 7 Plus Intel versions.

Although those phones could be used on the network, the line had to be activated using a different phone. Verizon wouldn't activate the Intel 7 or 7 Plus, at least not when I tried previously to switch to Verizon using the 7 Plus. It would always tell me my phone wasn't compatible. But now, the iPhone 8 and X are whitelisted for use on Verizon's network and labeled as non-CDMA devices.

That's weird as HoFo says they are supporting them now. I think you ran into somebody who didn't know what they were doing....
