So this is my first iPhone, although I'm familiar with apple products. I ordered at an ATT store and decided to get ATT insurance, with the possibility of canceling, because it covers loss/theft/accidental damage for $199 to get a new phone. However, now that they've announced Applecare+ it seems they're accidental coverage is better.

So my question is, anyone who has experience with ATT insurance do you think it's worth it to just cancel it now that they've announced Applecare+? Will save $10/month, but the only thing it would cover that applecare+ wouldn't is loss/theft. Is it worth the risk?

Don't give AT&T any more money. If you are risk averse go with AppleCare+. It extends the warranty of the phone, which AT&T does not.

AT&T insurance is better because it does cover loss & theft, the Apple one will only cover accidental damage.

Though check with your homeowners' or renter's insurance and see if they would be willing to cover your iPhone (sometimes they will :)). If they do, then AppleCare+ for damage.

I got AppleCare+ because I would much rather deal with Apple directly if I had an issue. Their customer service is what keeps me a loyal customer.

I do like dealing with Apple directly, which is why I will get applecare either way but just wondering if ATT insurance is really worth it just for loss/theft since applecare+ covers accidental damage now. Anyone deal with ATT insurance for loss/theft?

Next time I would recommend using a credit card that extends your warranty. It may not be 3yrs but still, most people only keep their phone for 1-2 yrs.

Go with AppleCare+ Trust me. Im a rep at an AT&T corporate store and another benefit of AppleCare+ is you only pay $49 for another iPhone if you need to use it. Verses paying $125 deductible with regular insurance.

Which credit cards provide accidental damage coverage for the full two years?

If you were a rep at my store you would be in the process of being fired... the deductible for iPhones is $199. There are advantages to both.

squaretrade

I'm surprised people have talked about squaretrade? It is usually cheaper than the applecare or now the applecare+, covers breakage and such, and for most it would appear works out well.

The beauty about AppleCare+ is everything can be done in the store... no over the phone BS and waiting for shipments and all that.

Now is it worth it?

You pay $100 for extended warranty + accidental.

If you use 1 recovery it is an extra $50 so your total is now $150.

If you break your phone, how hard do you actually have to break it to spend an extra $150? If you break it twice it's another $50, now totaling $200... again what are the chances of this?

AppleCare+ is a good insurance if you plan on SELLING the phone in the future...

Mentioned in several AppleCare+ threads. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1241043/

I'm not sure about the usually cheaper since it's showing as $99.99 (normally $124.99 says their website) on SquareTrade.com. So it's the same price as AppleCare+. Squaretrade gives ONE accident replacement w/ $50 deductible vs. two accident replacements ($50 ded.) with AppleCare+. Both transfer to a new owner if you sell the phone, both allow cancellation with prorated refunds AFAIK. With AppleCare+ you also get the extended phone support (if it matters to you) and if you live/work close to an Apple store it seems the service would likely be faster than shipping your phone to SquareTrade.

Neither covers loss/theft.

Yea right, the deductible for the original AppleCare is $199 for iPhones not AppleCareplus buddy. Do your research. AppleCare+ is only $49

And that's why people don't trust AT&T stores for honest advice.

I was told today with att insurance that the imei # was also recorded just incase you lost/stolen Phone that it could be recovered/blocked if anyone tried to use it.

Here's a question that I'm hoping someone might be able to answer...

I was planning on ordering Applecare+ for my new IP4s, but I pre-ordered through ATT.

According to the Applecare+ page, I would have had to purchase the AC+ at the time I purchased the phone. Well, last week ATT only offered their insurance, which I wasn't interested in.

Am I now shutout of purchasing AC+?... or is this something I can do when I register/activate the phone?

Any Ideas?

Someone posted elsewhere that Apple would send an e-mail offer for Apple + when your phone ships, and you will have a limited time to purchase it. I read that on this message board so take it for what it's worth, but it seems likely enough to me.

Thanks! I just saw that thread this am.

Agreed, it seems likely... fingers crossed.

Except that it is not offered for sale on the site. Its the old $69 applecare. Why not fix that?

The only thing that's making me hesitant is because ATT offers loss/theft protection to get a new phone for $199. If I don't have and and lose/get it stolen, will I have to pay the unsubsidized price of $800 or whatever it is to get a new one from Apple? Or can I pay the $199 that is the out-of-warranty price to get a new/refurb 4s?

you should not get the insurance in my opinion. the only thing it is good for is the lost/stolen but if you have it insured with your homeowners insurance or renters insurance your covered then also. they also cover for broken screens etc. I repair iPhones and you can get anything fixed on an iPhone for $100 or less. worst case a phone that cant be fixed can be sent to apple for the out of warranty replacement and that will cost you $199. so that will save you the monthly fee from At&t. now I have not read what the new applecare+ covers but the old apple care did not cover breakage.

Thanks. Applecare+ allows 2 accidental damage incidents to be repaired for $49. so what I'm mostly worried about is loss/theft, if i cancel ATT insurance which covers that. Would I be able to pay $199 for out of warranty coverage to get a new or refurbed iphone from Apple? Or would I need to buy a new phone at the full price?

If you lose it with applecare+ your out of luck, you have to pay full price.

I was reading the fine print on the ATT mobile insurance and it says:

Replacement Equipment: Asurion may fulfill claims with new or remanufactured equipment. The goal is to fulfill the claim with the same make and model of the insured equipment. However, depending on availability, you may instead receive a phone of like-kind and quality. Phone color, brand, model and features may be different and accessory compatibility is not guaranteed.

This scares me!!!!

That's just to cover a particular make/model phone no longer being available when you put in a claim. I don't think that problem will happen with Apple, they seem to be in it for the long haul.
