ATT iPhone 5 in the UK

I've got a friend that's in the UK. I thinking about giving them an iPhone 5 but it is locked to at&t. Will it work there? I remember reading somewhere here that it would. The phone is mine and paid off, but don't want to have to unlock it.
Any advice would be great.

If your friend changes her mind it will work aOK on everything but LTE (going by the tech specs listed over at Apple.)
