ATT iPhone in other countries?

I'm traveling to Italy this September and was thinking about bringing my iPhone 4 with me.

Has anyone had a good experience with using iPhone's GPS, mail features?

AT&T definitely does not make it cheap, so want to make sure at least it works.

You can bring it with you but AT&T will charge you an arm and a leg for roaming and if you use data and texts.
