Att Next then Buy outright

This is probably a stupid question but I’m currently on the Att next with iPhone 7plus. I’ve made the 12 payments already but just bought the X outright. All I have to do is turn in the 7+ and the payments will stop correct? Or do I need to pay off the remainder of the balance?
