Is this possible? I thought all the phones had the capability to use both networks. When the ATT sim is in though it says incorrect SIM.

There are a lot of posts about this already. The phone does support multiple bands, but it is locked only allowing Verizon and Vodaphone.

Would love to see this forum start to give warnings for not searching the forum

except that no string of search queries yields a thread similar to mine.. Sure plenty talk about unlocked SIM cards overseas and whatnot, but for the life of me I could not find one about using an ATT SIM in a Verizon 4S. It wasn't for lack of effort..

Verizon's iPhone 4S can be unlocked but will only work with foreign SIMs.

That means that AT&T and T-Mobile SIMs will not work even if the phone is unlocked; you can only roam on those networks with foreign SIMs.

See this thread for more info.

I guess I'm just curious how they can lock a phone if they all ship from apple the same. Is is something in the BIOS? There can't be 3 different versions of iOS 5 for Sprint/Verizon/AT&T can there... anyway thanks for the help guys.

They don't. Each carrier's iPhone 4S has a different model number:
