To start, I'm not a really technical guy, so I need some advice on the best way to set up my new Verizon iPhone 6.

I got the phone on launch day but am still under contract with ATT until 10/4, so I do not want to port my number over to Verizon until then. I tried setting up my new Verizon phone, but I am not able to make or receive calls (I get a message saying it's a non-working number).

When setting up the phone, I did not create a new Apple ID, I just plugged it in and synced with iTunes. I'm guessing this is my problem (one apple ID associated with two phones on different carriers).

My question is, am I better off creating a new Apple ID (not sure what the implications of this are... will I lose things?) or just wait until 10/4 when I port my ATT number to Verizon (would that alone solve the issue so I don't have to create a new Apple ID).

Thank you very much for any help!

That shouldn't be a problem, it just takes time to port the number in. I've done this before and it took about a day for it to go through correctly!

I guess I'm just wondering if this issue of using my same Apple ID will be resolved by porting my ATT number to Verizon on 10/4 or if I should create a new Apple ID to use with my new Verizon phone?

Currently I'm not able to make/receive calls on my Verizon phone and I'm thinking it's because my Apple ID is still associated with my ATT iPhone 5 which is still active.

Thank you!

No you don't need a new Apple ID. It's just because your waiting for the number to Port over. I'd call Verizon and see if them or ATT holding up the number transfer if its not resolved overnight. Remember when it is activated you may need to turn off Message and FaceTime to get them working correctly on the new phone.

It shouldn't be a problem, I never corrected a different Apple ID. If this is still giving you an issue, contact your local Verizon retail store.

Thanks for the responses. To clarify, I haven't started the process of porting my number to Verizon yet. I am waiting until 10/4 to do that when my ATT contract is up.

I'm thinking once I port my number on 10/4 it shouldn't be a problem using my existing Apple ID with the Verizon phone and then I should be able to make a receive calls from the phone which I'm currently not able to do.

Your Apple ID has nothing to do with your phone number/cellular service.

So, the phone you bought from Verizon, did it come with a phone number? Did you activate it? That sounds like the problem, as it has nothing to do (as you stated) with the porting of your old number.

On a side note, you can port your number from AT&T before the end of the contract on 10/4. You have already paid, and that is all AT&T cares about. Plus the porting of the phone number is done through Verizon, not AT&T, so they don't have a say in the fight.

No, the cell service isn't connected to your Apple ID at all.

Hmmm... the VZW rep I chatted with seemed to think it was because I hadn't activated the device (but as mentioned, I did sync to my iTunes account). I thought maybe it was because my ATT iPhone 5 is set-up with the same Apple ID. Currently any time I try to make a call or call my VZW number it just gives a message of "you are calling a non-working number).

Yes, the phone I purchased from Verizon came with a phone number. I picked it up from Apple store on launch day and they activated it. It is showing it's on the Verizon network with full LTE signal, yet I can't make or receive calls.

I thought porting my number would automatically cancel my contract with ATT? I don't want to do that until 10/4 so I don't have an ETF.

Sounds like you need to call Verz on this one. If its activated and not working its their issue, not your ID with Apple

You should be able to make and receive calls with the new Verizon number. Not sure why that's not working, but the Apple ID wouldn't affect it.

Like others have said, that's a Verizon issue, and shouldn't have anything to do with your Apple ID.

If they really activated your new phone at the Apple store and gave you a new Verizon number, then you're going to be billed for the days between then and 10/4 (when you port your AT&T number over), so I'd personally call and get the issue sorted out now.

Then you can use your new iPhone on your temporarily number to test out the Verizon coverage in your area and make sure that you're satisfied with it.

If you wait to test the coverage until 10/4, you've missed a lot of the 14-day window in which you can cancel the Verizon service and return the phone.

Yes, I totally agree with you on that one. I'd like to test out their service before my 14 days is up and right now I can't make/receive calls. Guess I'll be giving them a call. Thanks for all the input!

After speaking with a Verizon rep they have suggested I go back to the Apple Store where I purchased the phone. I did a full reset on the phone which apparently has resolved this issue in the past, but not for me. They suggested that something must have gone wrong (or got missed) when Apple activated the phone in the store. What are the changes Apple can help me resolve an issue with my phone not being able to make or receive calls? BTW, I am able to access internet through Verizon service (not on Wi-Fi).
