I was hoping ATT could transfer the eligibility from one of my 4 other lines to mine ahead of the pre-order so I could avoid the whole having to call them thing after the phone arrives.

Unfortunately, they either can't or won't. Anybody else have a different experience?

I think though I can just order the upgrade for any eligible line and just put my sim from my 5S in it and be good to go... done it that way in the past anyway.

Had some fun with the rep though:

Thank you for your patience! Your AT&T Representative will be with you shortly.

Welcome! You are now chatting with 'Kaye Olsen'

Me: hello

Kaye Olsen: Hi ! Yes! You can definitely use other line's upgrade and activate this much awaited Iphone 6 in your line! I can sure feel your excitement . :)

Me: Can the eligibility be transferred ahead of time or do I need to do it at the time of upgrade. I will be using Apple's Store application to make the purchase as I do each year. I just want to avoid the hassle of having to order for another line, then when it arrives, calling in, getting it switched, etc.

Kaye Olsen: With this case , we recommend you to do the upgrade online. Because on your online account, you can simply click UPGRADE TODAY on the line you want to use. Then when you get your device, you would need to contact us back to activate it on your line.

Me: unfortunately that method doesn't work. The ATT website always crashes during pre-order. The apple store app is the only guaranteed method. So I suppose my only option is to order it as if it is for another line, then have it switched after the fact.

Me: It's a shame ATT can't just transfer the eligibility

Kaye Olsen: Let me look for the best option for you !

Kaye Olsen: Your line is -xxx8 and you want to use line -xxx6 eligibility?

Me: Yes. I want to use the eligibility on xxxxxxxxx6 on xxxxxxxxx8

Kaye Olsen: Thank you! One sec please..

Kaye Olsen: We are currently checking on the best option for you .

Me: ok thanks

Kaye Olsen: One moment please..

Kaye Olsen: We have exhausted all our resources and the best way to do the Shared upgrade is only through online at att.com. In case that the website crashes, you can always get help with our Sales Chat deparment who can further help us in finishing your upgrade.

Me: I am saddened. You can no longer hear my excitement. It must be very quiet there now... the lack of hearing my excitement and all. The deafening quiet will remind you all day that ATT has saddened me :(

Me: But you were very nice and helpful

Kaye Olsen: I can hear your sigh .. There will be some time that the website is down as expected as tons of Iphone lover would do the pre-order. :(

Me: ok. I will just do it the old way and call in once the phone arrived to have it swapped. They will still do that, correct?

Kaye Olsen: Yes! We will be more than happy to help you with it !

Me: ok. Well thank you very much! Have a good day :)

for the past 2 iPhone launches, i have just bought the phone with the available upgrade then, instead of activating it at home i take it to an att store and have them switch the phone to my number.

I just had the same experience -- I can't transfer the eligibility to my line. I love my mom but I am sooo annoyed she stole my upgrade when she bought her 5C in June!

If you go to AT&T's website and log into your account and go to check device upgrade eligibility it should give you an option to transfer upgrade eligibilty. I see this on my lines that are not eligible but another like that is eligible.

It's called a shared upgrade.

From AT&T:
"If a number you want to upgrade is not currently eligible for an upgrade, you may be able to perform a Shared Upgrade. A Shared Upgrade lets you transfer the upgrade eligibility of a device on the same billing account with the device you want to upgrade."

Hmm, interesting. When I click on the line that is eligible it just takes me to a page promo of the iPhone 6, and says that line is eligible. Then if I click continue, it gives me the lineup of phones to choose from.

After spending two hours talking to the ATT reps I give up. I'm just going to ever, ever, ever again let my mom or anyone else take the eligibility of my phone line, leaving me in the predicament of order under her line (which one rep said would cancel her phone, another said it wouldn't) and swap SIM cards or contact ATT for the line swap, or just go wait in the damn line.
