Hello All,

Just got my new Air M1 today. I am about to try Migration Assistant, but wanted to see if anyone else was having problems with it? I'd really appreciate all of your feedback.

Thanks!

That linked thread isn't about Migration Assistant. The person there tried to do a factory restore on their Mac. That's a known problem that there is a fix for. I have never had trouble with Migration Assistant.

Is the error that you were referring to the one listed on the front webpage? If so, would I be smart to update my new M1 first to 11.0.1 before doing Migration Assistant?

Thanks much!

Also, I am sorry I'm a little slow, but what exactly will Migration Assistant transfer? Will it transfer all of my Word documents? How about my Microsoft Office apps? Or, will I need to re-dowload things like that?

I migrated using the assistant to an MBA M1 - no issues. So, anecdotally there is 1 sample in favor.

I transferred everything - apple, documents and settings. Worked like a charm.

And yes, if your current system has a newer macOS installed you'll be prompted to upgrade on the target machine (as was I to Big Sur 11.01)

Make that two samples in favor. I got my MBA M1 yesterday and transferred over all my files from my old MBA using Migration Assistant. Only trouble that I had was that the new Mac wasn't updating to 11.0.1 prior to the transfer, so I chose to skip it and update the machine after the fact. After a day of use, still haven't found any problems using this method. Hope it helps you decide.

Migration Assistant worked fine for me. I did a Carbon Copy Clone of my 12" MacBook to an external SSD. It took about 15 minutes to transfer about 200GB of data to my M1 MacBook Air and everything's been great for the last week.

Migration Assistant worked like a charm for me last week. It's one of the best features of macOS.

That's exactly what I did too. Not a single problem.
