So, they need to set up the front facing camera to detect where people are in the room you are calling to and make it appear your eyes are following them, like in a haunted house painting.

That's really a breakthrough, although not really perfect at the moment (it's awkward to see a face that's distorted). And I hope to see better previews than these ones...

What if I want to roll my eyes? Eyes are key in human interaction, lot of subtle, unconscious information are transmitted to the other person via eye position and movement. Also...can I blink?

Jesus,

How many Gin and Tonics did THIS guy have over the past 5 years?

I mean he looks hung over..

This is just the beginning.
In the near future AI combined with Quantum computers will be able to alter our physical reality in similar ways, bringing everything we see into question.

I'd say the beginning has already started with the advent of Deep Fakes. It's insane how accurate they can be, this is one of the best examples / breakdowns I've seen (REMOVE ASTERISK)

Note: This video contains political, adult, and other controversial themes - the only reason I'm sharing is to show the explanation and demonstration of Deep Fakes, which is why I've shared the link and not embedded the video.

Not sure those images explain the feature very well at all.

You don’t see a difference in the two photos in where his eyes are pointing?

Assuming this is not a joke...

This is pretty disturbing.

Hopefully, this is at least off by default in all versions of the OS going forward

What’s disturbing? It is the equivalent of mounting the camera in the center of the screen.

Well how cool is this! I use FT to teach a weekly class. I use my iPad mostly in landscape and have always wished Apple would move the camera to the “side” position like laptops have. However, I’ve learned to not look at the screen while teaching. This new AR tech will make it even easier. Amazing the things software can do.

Wow, somebody actually paid attention to this. Awesome Apple.
Now is this supported by all devices with iOS 13, including the 6s?

Tech overreach....ugh. Why nickel and dime us? Just get to the end game!!!
Have my AI/CGI Avatar talk FOR me. And make me more physically appealing for Tinder/Snapchat.
And since we are already tumbling down this slippery slope, create a clone that can go to work for me.

So we have texting which removes the connection between physical interaction and emotion and create emoticons... then we have Facetime fixing our eyes so we have that more physical connection since looking elsewhere lacks that relationship. I guess technology has come a long way from the days we used to go play in the streets with real people.....

Nice video, shame they didn't include any horrifying examples of overcorrection though

I don‘t understand what the feature exactly does.

It creates a face map of what you look like when you are looking directly into the camera so on always appear to be looking at the camera when you shift your eyes to look at the image of the person you’re talking to. It would be more obvious for someone doing FaceTime on something like an iPad Pro 12.9 cause the camera is way off from the center of the screen where the other image is. If you have an iPad Pro 12.9 you can see the difference by taking a selfie with your eyes pointed at the camera and then one looking at the center of the screen.
