i want the 12 inch ibook, but no way in hell will i spend 500 dollars more for a powerbook just for a feature i need.

I went over the "Should I get the 12-in iBook or 12-in PowerBook?" thing over and over. I came to the similar conclusions:

The PowerBook is a better deal for the money$$$.

The cheap $900 iBook is a better design (mainly the case, and battery life).

So, since niether one would do a good enough job for the latest gaming, I decided that the iBook would be my choice for portable use and I could just upgrade the video card in my WinXP gaming Desktop with the money that I save.

Well, I am FED-UP with the months of waiting for an update! My birthday is on July 29 and my mom is going to buy me a laptop. If they don't update it within the next week or two I am just going ask her to get me a $1500 (after coupon) gaming laptop from Dell. It will have a nice big 17-in widescreen for games and I can still have iTunes for music. I can toss my PC out and use the Dell for both my laptop and as a desktop replacement!

Are Paragonvictim and I the only ones who finds this rather interesting, that people are in a Mac Forum talking sh*t on Macs. If you are gonna buy a PC thats fine, but go discuss it in a PC forum.

Durability is a big plus for students ....

Especially when a accidental drop can take out a machine at the worst possible time -- when they cannot afford a repair or do without a machine for that time.

You lose some speed, but nearly eliminate the PB's biggest speed bump -- damage.

Face it the aluminum may look nice, but it's way too fragile.

---

Remember most repairs will end up being a big chunk of the cost of the machine.

i almost went for the powerbook 15" but settled for the 14" ibook
the way i figure it, i got a great deal on my ibook $1000 after rebates and such
the powerbook would cost me a good $600 more and isn't that much better
in a year or so i'll sell the ibook and get a real awesome apple laptop, intel processor DDR2 memory big graphics card bigger and faster HD

the current powerbooks just aren't that much better than the current ibooks but cost so much more IMHO

Powerbook vs. ibook- haven't I heard this all before? Oh yeah, it's been swirling around these forums in one place or another for months now. I myself posted this question in the late lamented nibnt thread, and also in the new official thread for apple laptop update speculation, npbnt. Basically what I said was this: If pbs were in every way vastly superior to ibs, then it would be tempting to try to find the funds to buy one. But from what many people are saying, they just aren't. Yes, they have better video and are significantly faster (excepting 12"), but they don't come with that much more memory (and I agree the two 256 set up is just stupid), get worse airport reception, and, since theyre doing so many more (and for my purposes, unneccesary) things like lighting the keyboard, they get poorer battery life. Plus they dent. So it really comes down to this: video and speed vs. everything else. I'd prefer an updated ibook, but if no updates arrive before school starts, I'm certainly not going to spend $500 to lose important features.

Amen to that.

I did it! I went and got a Win-XP machine. It is a Gateway 7510GX (Athlon 64 Processor 3700+, ATI X600 128MB, 1GB, 100GB, DVDRWDL) The 15.4" WXGA TFT widescreen display with Ultrabright technology looks awsome. I am so happy! :D :D :D

It only cost $1,250 on sale at Best Buy. here
BTW, The sale ends tomorrow.

Now I have to go find someplace to buy Battlefield 2. Gaming here I come! :p

Sorry everyone about showing my opinion. I didn't know it was such a crime to give my advice. While I could argue this day on out, I have a social life to attend to.

Once again, sorry.

Your sharing your opinion, we're sharing ours. My opinion just happens to be that your advice is crap to those students on a budget.

That thing is a beast! Like seriously, a freakin 3700+ with NICE video card, 1GB RAM, nice hard drive, dvd burner....

But... I wouldn't get it for a few reasons (these only pertain to me).
1) ugly as ****
2) that screen sure doesn't look widescreen, but if it is that's awesome
3) only pentium m laptops get good battery life
4) thick and fat, not my cup of tea in a laptop
5) did i mention it's ugly?

Don't get me wrong, That's comparable to a desktop version with the same hardware. But as far as laptops go, except for being fast, it doesn't have much going for it. And that's what's great about apple laptops. They're not as fast, but they're still mighty quick where it counts, look terrific, very light, great battery performance.

But still, that was a great purchase and you're going to be extremely happy with a laptop that kicks that much ass at such a cheap price.
