I know I can probably figure this out on my own, but my iPad is currently doing what I bed ATV to do which is access iTunes and play through an old receiver to deck/pool speakers. I want to be able to control from my phone.

So I was thinking save a few bucks, get a used ATV1 since is has RCA outputs. Old receiver does not have an optical input.

After a brief look on ebay looks like ATV 1s are all being sold jailbroken. Will ATV1 serve my need of using the remote app to change tunes? Or should I just buy the ATV3 and an adaptor?

ATV 1 will work. I have one and the extra outputs are great. Easy to control remotely with the apple remote app or just use it as an airplay speaker extension.

AirPort Express will do this for you, even an old used one, and it's smaller & less prone to failure than ATV1 (no hard drive in an AirPort Express). I use a 2nd gen model I got on eBay for about $35 to do exactly this.

Thanks, didn't think about that.

My current plan is to just hook the PC directly to the stereo receiver. They are in the same room. It appears that the remote App will control my iTunes library on my PC. I thought you had to have ATV (or AirPort Express). The $10 cable arrived from monoprice yesterday.

Only problem I have encountered using the Remote App is that most songs are not able to be located. This is most likely a separate issue related to moving my iTunes library to a new external.

Thanks to all for the help
