ATV 3 - any future OS/app development?

With all the focus on ATV 4 and tvOS, I am wondering if Apple is planning any future OS development for ATV 3. I believe the Apple OS is based on iOS 8.x. If they are not planning on offering any more upgrade or apps for it, I think they should plan on stopping selling ATV3 instead of making any new potential users disappointed with lack of updates etc. Personally, I have a feeling that ATV 3 hit its dead end at this point even though they continue selling it.

the only use I get from the ATV3 is Plex and Airplay, besides that, I don't use any app or features. I don't think they will release anything other that security fix.

And i'm surprised ATV 3 is still getting that. Much slower updates on my devices, but i would have thought they ceased at one stage.

I have two AppleTV's and only use them to access a large local library. I couldn't care less if they offer any updates, it does all I want now.
