Setup includes:
Sony TV xbr 850c
Sony STR DN 1050
Apple TV 4K

Apple TV is connected directly to TV hdmi 1
TV and receiver are linked with hdmi to ARC inputs.

Apple audio output set to 1050. Sound settings best quality.
Receiver sound settings set to Movie Dolby 5.1
Speaker set up center, front L/R, Rear R and sub woofer.

When streaming Netflix, Hulu, Prime etc, audio defaults back to PCM or Airplay. Cannot get all speakers to output, center only.

Any ideas on corrective action to get theater sound? Thanks.

best quality will send PCM, you might try switching it to dolby digital

you can search netflix for "example short 23.976" that will show you the bitrate your video is streaming, but it also has multi channel audio tests. it's been a while since I've done it, but they're close to the beginning, i think it says a channel, and then a sweep, maybe?

is is possible to test with the aTV connected to your receiver (you might have to drop it to 1080 before)

Yes, do plan to connect ATV directly to AVR however assumed quality would be better with a direct ATV connect to TV. Also have a Tivo OTA connected to TV and receiver and sound is perfect in all sound modes.

You would limit your audio options to what Sony Bravia is supporting (basically only DD, DD+ and DTS), if you let it intermediate and output audio to AVR via ARC.

Determined the Sony receiver DN 1050 is the problem. Not ready for HMDM 2.2 or HDR. Switch ATV back to direct connect with TV 850C. Sound still not ideal but images are excellent 4K HDR 60hz. 4.2.2.

I use the audio output setting as the ATV and not the receiver. The audio still goes to the receiver so i'm not quite sure what that setting is for but everything works fine. I leave sound as best quality. Audio from netflix and such should show as multichannel PCM.

Yes. I have set up that way. The audio switches back and forth between PCM and Dolby theater however seems to be rather finicky.

Have you tried connecting to your AVR and setting it for HDMI pass through?

Then go into settings on ATV and be sure it's going through HDMI for the audio. When you connect directly to the TV and choose the AVR for audio, I think you are using AirPlay, which, at this point, has some audio limitations. (You could try turning off wifi & BT on the AVR, go to the ATV settings to select it so that the audio goes through the HDMI cable, then turn AVR wifi & BT back on).

I looked up your AVR, it's still for sale at Best Buy, they say it's HDR compatible, but, the way it is stated, sounds like you need to set it for HDMI pass through.

Don't need HDMI 2.2, just 2.1. Unless you're referring to HDCP 2.2?

It doesn't do HDR. Just 4k. Though he'd be able to get HD audio from local movies but connecting directly to the AVR.

Nope, HDMI 2.0 (2.0a 2.0b) for 4K UHD HDR up to 18Mbps.

...2.1 is beyond 18Mbps up to 48Mbps, which is next gen, that standard was just set in November and nothing has been made with it yet, except cables, ...Apple sells the Belkin HDMI 2.1 48Mbps cable, as the ATV 4K running at 60Hz with DV and PCM audio can get close to the limit of HDMI 2.0 cables, (can use up to 17.x Mbps). Most UHD BD players will output at 24p which uses less bandwidth.

...And, as far as what I wrote, I was asking the OP, do you own that AVR? If not, then, he should try what I wrote. I've been looking up the AVR, but, the sony manual is badly done. I've read where others have been able to use their AVR with it set to HDMI pass through, this may be a setting that works with each input individually. As long as the AVR supports HDCP 2.2, which it should, there shouldn't be a problem. He probably needs to fiddle with his settings. Sometimes the AVR has a color setting that also needs to be set to 4:2:2 (edit: or 4:2:0), I'm trying to find this now in the horrible sony manual.

That's what I was thinking, I was off by .1
Though technically DV only requires HDMI 1.4, HDR10 requires HDMI 2.0a
HDMI 2.0 added the bandwidth needed for 4k. 2.0a added HDR support. 2.0b added support for HLG.

In post 6 he said he tried his AVR.
It also does not support HDCP 2.2

Dude, you need to leave it to the OP. I'm telling you, there are settings he needs to try in his AVR first.

"The 4K pass-through feature is High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) 2.2-compatible and allows data to pass through the system without quality loss."

That's generic and doesn't apply to this receiver.
Go down to questions here and you'll see it doesn't support HDCP 2.2
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DN1050-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B00JC31SEI
Here it also notes it doesn't support HDCP 2.2
https://www.soundandvision.com/content/sony-str-dn1050-av-receiver

And here's a very long thread on this receiver, post 1298 says it doesn't support HDCP 2.2 as well as many other posts.
