So I purchased a refrubed ATV 4K. Updated it to the latest tvOS, and right away noticed flickering, and eventually video drop outs. I am using a 2.0 HDMI cable with my 4K Samsung which has never had issues. I figured it had to do with the ATV itself......?? maybe not refurbished properly? I already returned it and bought a brand new one I will pick up tomorrow.

In the mean time I searched online and found a lot of people had this issue. Some suggested to use the Belkin HDMI cable Apple sells (which seem overpriced) What has been your experiences?

BTW which one of these should I go with? https://www.apple.com/shop/tv/tv-accessories/power-cables?page=1

aTV UI runs at 4K 60fps so consumes full bandwidth (18Gbps/300MHz) of a Premium HDMI cable.
Said Belkin is fine (I use them 2 in a row :) ) but I also had no problems with Sony 18Gbps cable for half the price.
NB! 18Gbps means that all HDMI ports along the way have to be configured into "Enhanced" mode.

I’ve also had problems with HDMI cables with the ATV 4K. It didn’t like the same cable I use for my Oppo 4K player.

How long of a cable do you need? If it’s a short run try Monoprice’s certified HDMI slim cable. Max length is 8’ though. I usually don’t have a problem with Monoprice certified cables, but I see the occasional lost audio on ATV 4K (sound is lost and I have to put the unit to sleep and wake it back up to restore audio).

So I got the new 4k and hooked it up. After a quick dropout, it worked fine. The refurb one was constantly dropping video.

I recently updated to tvOS 14 and things seemed fine until one night no icons but I could see pulsing or movement in the dimly lit screen that would sometimes flash with the atv screen and then disappear. After trying 3 HDMI ports and checking for updates for my LG tv it seemed to be working again at least for 2 days and then it happened again. I moved the cord around. restarted everything and its working. I ordered a new cord I will pick up today. I am hoping that is all it is.

probably has more to do with the beta os than the cable.
