For those of you with this setup, I’ve read a fair amount that the best ATV settings are to turn on dynamic range and frame rate matching and set it to 4K SDR. This way, the content is presented in its intended form, including DolbyVision and such.

This TV has a hell of a good picture, and I’ve noticed that the ATV aerial screensavers just look better with 4K HDR turned on vs 4K SDR. In SDR, the aerial screensavers look washed out. It’s much prettier with HDR enabled.

You’d think that Apple would intend for these screensavers to be in HDR since much was made of HDR when they released this box a few years ago.

I’m also wondering how many of these folks recommending SDR over HDR have this specific TV with its capabilities.

Anyone with the same setup out there have thoughts on this? Setting it to DolbyVision has pretty much a similar positive effect with the screensavers and I’m thinking of keeping it there.

I do not own iTunes content for what that’s worth. Not a factor. The TV itself is in Cinema mode.

The reason it’s recommended to set to 4K SDR is because not all apps support dynamic range matching, so let’s say you’re watching something on YouTube that’s SDR and the ATV4K is set to 4K HDR or DV you will get a forced/fake HDR or DV applied which in most cases will look awful, especially on the lower bit rate videos.
It’s all down to personal preference as it’s pretty much a toss up between lovely looking screensavers vs rubbish looking SDR content that’s got forced HDR/DV.

Yes, I get that, and have had this TV for a couple of months with DV turned on but not dynamic range and frame match. The reason I started going down this road was I’ve noticed a visual stutter effect, particularly with Marvel films on Disney+. Dr. Strange looked notably jittery. Turning on the matching fixed that problem, and I still had DV enabled.

I generally had not noticed any problems aside from that but I’m not an AV expert, and as you said, personal preference.
