Well I was trying to watch some movies from my computer on my ps3 last night like I always do. I kept getting a dlna error but it's never been perfect never played everything and sometimes it would take forever to play. Since I couldn't get it working I was thinking how else can I get these all different format videos to my tv. Then it hit me up the new features in iOS 4.3. Didn't have it on my phone yet but had it on my iPad 2. So I updated my ATV and installed the air video beta server.

All I have to say is WOW. quality is crystal clear and it played INSTANTLY. Didn't matter what kind of format I attempted to play. Beats the pants off the ps3ms where you had to go into special transport folders and it would still take 20 seconds to start. What else is impressive my ps3 and computer are wired. Yet with AirPlay it's wireless and it STILL worked much better.

My only qualm is you can't browse videos without the iPad and the fast forward and rewind on the ATV didn't work for me had to do it all on the iPad. But it still was way better. This is the first example of why the ATV NEEDS an app store. So you could put air video directly on the ATV.

    RIP PS3MS

I have Tversity streaming to my PS3 and it works pretty good. The upside is that you can have surround sound with it and you currently don't get surround sound with airplay. I still like the way it works with the ATV, though.

I used to use PS3MediaServer and a bunch of other DLNA compatible software to stream to my PS3 and I had the same poor experience compared to AirPlay that you experienced. AirPlay simply works far better.

When airplaying videos you can still use a regular remote, universal remote, or the one the ATV comes with to control the Airplayed video. I'm not sure why it didn't work for you. Also AirPlay does support surround sound. It is just the Air Video app that doesn't support it yet although the developer said he would be adding it in future update.

Yeah, I know, that is why I said it "currently don't get surround sound". I haven't streamed to my PS3 in a while, but I don't remember having many issues. I will try it out again over the weekend.

I use Medialink by Nullriver but have never used an AppleTV. I'm considering selling the PS3 and getting AppleTV and a Blu-Ray player instead as I find myself not playing games much these days. I ripped all my DVD's onto my Mac but when I stream them to the PS3 I the playback is jerky. Not terribly so, but certainly noticeable, I presume the AppleTV would be better what with it's wireless N instead of G.

edit: Also, the AppleTV interface is much, much nicer than the Medialink interface, something my girlfriend refuses to master!

Yeah the fast forward bar comes up when you hit fast forward but no matter how fast you set it to it just plays normal.

The biggest advantage to the the ATV to me is the lack of startup time. With the PS3 you sit around and wait for the thing to start. The apple tv with your mobile iOS device is almost instantaneous.
