Use a stereo pair of Homepods with AppleTV in 12 x 12 living room with 18 foot high vaulted ceiling next to dining room and kitchen? The plan would be to place on 2 end tables on the opposite side of the room from the TV.

thoughts!???

When setting up HomePod for the best surround sound, place the speaker within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall and as close to the center of your TV as possible. If you use a HomePod stereo pair, place the speakers on either side of the TV. For optimal surround sound, the HomePod speakers should be about 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart from each other.

sheepish. Thank you for the optimal surround locations, that makes sense to use the walls for optimal placement.

My idea is to bring the sound closer to where we are sitting so the volume can be turned down. The effect would be moving the sound closer and with HomePod, the sound should be more dynamic.

The last sentence states they should be 4t feet apart. This has to do with stereo imaging and is different depending on the speakers. Too far apart and you lose imaging+phantom center channel for movies. Too close and it loses surround potential.

My tower home theater speakers require 8ft apart or more for proper imaging so the tiny HomePods can only do so much.

If you’re talking about how close you are sitting to the speakers then you never said that. Your speakers should be on either side of you tv and how close you sit to the tv is dependent on the size of the tv.
