    Hi Guys,
I've used the remote App, the stock one from Apple to control the ATV,
turns out it appears only an emulation of the supplied remote.
That makes sense since the ATV already comes with a remote.

What I want to do, is connect one to a stereo, without any TV,
and be able to play music through the stereo,
but it appears there's no way to use it without seeing it through a monitor.
You wouldn't know what part of the menu you are in, to be able to navigate it.

Are there any solutions for this?
    Cheers, Art.

Since you'd only be playing audio you'd could AirPlay things from your phone/tablet/computer.

Alternatively if both your computer and ATV were both signed in to the same home sharing account the iOS Remote app will also let you select content to play instead to the useless (without a TV to view the UI) gesture based remote.

I've attached a screenshot from my iPad showing home sharing content on an ATV in the remote app to this post.

Your iPhone would offer a similar UI just smaller.

I could only see the airplay button, when the ATV was on, for videos, and not in the Music App,
but there isn't a separate setting for airplay in the Music App Settings menu.
It's still a beside the point I might as well plug the iPhone into the stereo then.

I got a Panasonic TV, that does all that, YouTube, and internet browser, server.
A music player is the only thing I can think of to make it useful (and it would be).

The airplay button would be in iTunes on you computer. Or on your ios device.

Yes, but the airplay button is only present when there's something to send it to.
When the ATV is connected, I only see it in the Videos App, not the Music App.

    are you on iOS 7?

swipe up to bring up the control panel, airplay is there.

    Look like you're right.
Still doesn't solve the problem. It would have been nice to find a use for it independently
(or at least just connected to the router).
Still might as well just plug the phone into the stereo, and save the phone's battery life.

They do call it Apple TV I suppose, not Apple Music player,
just sux that the right hardware is there, just can't do it without a TV.

Looks like the Airport Express is what you need.

Actually, doesn't matter if you use AppleTV or AirPort Express for audio streaming, the takeaway for OP is this: you can't navigate your library nor initiate playback from the AppleTV (AP Express even doesn't have any UI for this) side. You need to start AirPlay from your iTunes or iOS device.

Where are you sourcing the music from? If it's from iTunes on a local Mac/PC, you can use Home Sharing to do exactly this - no need for a TV. Just use the remote app, select the AppleTV, then select the Home Sharing server as a source and navigate it to play.

If you're playing music from iTunes Match, I'm not certain if that appears in the remote app.

This works, this only issue I have ran into is it is slow building the Home Sharing menu each time, but other than that it works just the way the OP wants (if i understand what the OP wants)

Really? It's very quick for me.

If I use the Music app on the iOS device, it does take some time initially to load/build the Home Sharing library; but if I use the Remote app, select Computers then the library it comes up straight away.

As previously stated, are you sure you have it setup right? I do this all day long by having my ATV hooked to my Stereo and use the Remote Apple (with Homesharing) to play my music in iTunes from my Mac Mini in the basement. The Remote app sends any song I want that is currently in iTunes to my AppleTV without even having to turn the TV on.

Normally that would be ok, just that the computer is rebooted some what often into Windows and back.
Not too much a big deal, but I think Apple should make allowance for it to work
stand alone like that, just streaming straight from iTunes Store with a router.
I don't think it would be difficult for them, just obviously not their intention.

At least with Airplay (for the phone or whatever) it is a good way to get an
optical output for the stereo, and be able to control things still, but not ideal.

You can stream straight from iTunes Store! There are 3 ways for that:
    1) your purchases
    2) iTunes Match
    3) iTunes Radio
can all be played directly from cloud.
