Im gonna upgrade my ATV3 but am undecided on going with the 4K or regular 4. Price isn’t the issue. I’m just concerned about my internet speed. I live in the sticks and only have a 12mbs download speed, give or take a few depending on who all is on WiFi. My tv is 4K capable, but I am worried I’ll spend more time buffering a movie rather than enjoying it.

If you had a 12mbps internet would you still go with 4K or would you just buy the regular 4? Can I just set all content to stream 1080 to solve the problem? Thanks in advance.

I would go with a 4th Gen if you can get a good deal otherwise get the 4k and force it to do 1080p.

Apple is offering a refurb 4 with 64gig for $139.

Seems like a good deal since you can’t get 4 with 64 gig anymore

Is changing the resolution no longer an option? What apps do you use on the ATV3?

I would say go with the 5, as it is just a little more than the 4. If you only use Netflix, then you would have to pay extra for 4K content anyways. YouTube doesn't have a 4K app on the ATV5. And iTunes will not steam 4K unless your connection will support the stream.

So, unless I am missing something, I don't see the downside. Besides, I thought you can manually switch to 1080p in the settings, unless it was removed for some ridiculous reason.

Direct TV had a special with a free ATV4 when you subscribe to three months of DTN. I think it is still going on. I think it costs $104 for the 3 months, and you get a free 32GB ATV4.

Much cheaper than Apple's refurbished price.

Grab the 4 while you can, except if u like 4K or will be upgrading the TV..

12mbs doens't sound like it could handle 4k without buffering allot.

I got a 3rd gen and 4th gen, but if i like the 4 still i'll continue buying it, even if i must resort to ebay.

Since money is not a concern, I'd go with the 4K one. I can only anticipate that your internet speed will improve, and once the buffering starts, it will take care of the rest. At one point in time, (3 months ago), we had 2 :apple: TV 3, one :apple: TV 4, 3 kids watching Youtube, and us surfing the net while watching an HD movie on a 50 Mb service. Once the :apple: TV started the buffering, it took care of the stuttering movie.

Also, upgrading the router can help too with the "everyone sharing the Wifi" problem. I had two routers, and putting the :apple: TVs on one router really helped. Now, we got the Orbi ones, and that has really cut down on the choke points of bandwidth. I guess the 8 year old routers aren't really up to it.
