Audio crossfade?

this option was included with my fourth gen ipod nano why isn't part of the iphone 3.0? I thought it was useless at first but I kind of like it now..

I'm interested in fading the last / first 5 seconds of two songs together. The way I understand gapless playback is that it simply removes silence at the end of a track.
