Its A Keeper!!

:)Yup, It's a Keeper for me. 3G reception here is very good in PR(Puerto Rico). I wonder why Oregon has bad 3G, are you sure it's not your phone? you should check it, just in case!

Because it's Oregon and they don't pay sales taxes.

I'm keeping mine for sure!
Everybody keeps complaining about AT&T's 3G. It's freakin' fantastic here. Excellent coverage & speed.
enjoy where you are. Mid West Canada is worse :p Im getting lower 3G speeds than Edge :(

So..

So after August 11th, if I go in to cancel my account I will have to pay the $175 ETF, but get to keep the phone. Correct? It's a toss up right now for me.

I live in Seattle and debating if I should ride Amtrak to Oregon to buy Mac Air =).

But the train ride would be more than the tax you'd pay in Seattle. Plus, you'd still have to pay the tax when you take it home (or face prosecution) due to new state laws that took effect on July 1, 2008.

not to mention "no sales taxes" :D

That's what I was going to say, and you have great public transit in Portland also. I admit thats the only city that I have ever visited in Oregon. Hell any place is better than where I live. I truly am in a red state with a bunch of right wing nut jobs. :D

I love my iPhone. AT&T service sucks at my house, though. If I go half a block in any direction, it goes to five bars and 3G. But at my house (inside or outside), the best I can get is 2 bars and EDGE. It's not like I live in the boonies, I'm half a block from the San Jose city line.

Granted, it was exactly the same on my Moto RAZR also on AT&T. So, it's not the phone's fault.

Well, I still have the house line and wifi in the house, so all is not lost.

you must only go to metro area then

yes mostly. I did say almost. I spent a week in Hilton Head Island and it was Edge only. But by Metro, it doesn't mean big downtown areas. I live in Austin, TX and get good 3G coverage everywhere.

I know some places I travel like Wyoming and such will not have 3G and I will very happy to have Edge in those places.

But some people like to describe the coverage as being very limited and I think for those who do not live in small towns, the coverage is good.

Not sure the eye rolling was necessary, but no worries.

3G is pretty limited to bigger cities. I wish it wasn't. What I want to know is why can't it be national? Like Edge is now?

btw, eye rolling was just for effect :D

I got mine 7/11, and so far have lived on the "EDGE" the majority of the time, and that has served its purposes, I can wait an extra second or two... I've had next to zero problems or complaints.

Now, I understand if your handset is truly defective, but alot of complaints are so trivial.

Actually, I kind of think it is funny how trivial people can be, as if a couple hundred dollars warrant the epitome of perfection. It would be one thing if Apple wasn't exchanging defective products. Yes, if your battery craps out after an hour, complain. Yes, if there's a serious OS glitch, complain. Absolutely not, if you scratched up your phone by being careless, leave Apple alone, you are just driving up costs for everyone else. And quit whinging about stuff that doesn't affect the intended use of the phone... If you bought one and there's no reception where you live, what possessed you to get one? Get an iPod Touch, and enjoy your piece of wilderness, or move and enjoy your iPhone if it is so important to you.

Nobody threatened bodily harm if you didn't buy your new iPhone. That would be one sick nerdaphile!

Because they have to go to each tower and add extra equipment and more data lines coming into it. It is hard enough getting the Broadband they need to rural towers because of local Telcos and ISPs. It is also expensive to do the upgrades. So they upgraded places where they would have the greatest impact. Then the extra cost for 3G service is used to pay for equipment and labor to install the 3G systems on outlying towers. 3G will grow orgainicly outward from the metros and eventually have a foot print equal to or greater than EDGE. Likely around the time they start testing LTE.

Damn our wonderful state legislators...

Train ride isn't that bad, $60 bucks each way for two plus it's fun I guess...

How's your part of the state, beautiful scenery on that stretch of highway on the Hood River side.

It sucks that I'll have to pay for 3G when I can't use it, though.

Yes, I know I could get the first gen iPhone, but I'd rather have the 3G.

What do you mean from 2 metro areas to 5? (edit: in Oregon) I find 3G almost everywhere I go. and it is almost always nice and fast.

I can't imagine going back to an Edge only device.

At the start of the year, AT&T had 3G in Portland and Eugene. Now they have it in Medford, Salem, and the Oregon Coast too. Even the Southern Coast, like Coos Bay/North Bend. It's not AT&T, but one of the regional carriers (U.S. Cellular?). Roaming agreement = 3G for me.

Now if they could just get Bend, the 3rd largest metro area......

Ordered my iPhone 3G replacement

I waited in line to get my iPhone on July 11th and it my first 48 hrs with it were miserable. Once I got it working I started realizing all of it's bugs and shortcomings. I decided to hold out until Apple released a firmware upgrade and now that they have and my iPhone experience hasn't gotten much better, I'll be returning it. This is my 3rd smartphone and I'm really surprised at all of the simple user conveniences and functions that are missing from the iPhone. Apple really needs to give up some control if they ever to really compete in the smartphone market.

I'll be replacing my 16gb iPhone 3G with the Nokia N95 8gb.

If you love the phone so much, why not just turn off 3G and use the edge network which i'm sure has better service?

It's sad to see that people are returning iPhones in areas with weak coverage.

But this will be an incentive for ATT to improve coverage in that area.

So those who are having problems may find that within a year it has improved.

*Sigh* In the USA you have to choose good phones or good coverage. It's a sucky cycle. Oh well...

In two weeks I'll be moving back to my college campus and we do not have 3G which kinda sucks since I'll be paying it. When I'm out though I'll have it for the majority of the 2 year contract so it's not a big deal. Especially since I'll have wifi around campus and be able to turn off 3G for extra battery :D

Good luck with the N95! Entering text is painful and the battery life sucks. If I was going to buy another Nokia it would be the E71 or N96. For now, I am sticking with my unlocked 16 iPhone 3G.

It makes me sad to think that the coverage isn't great everywhere...

But, unless one phone company held a monopoly on cell towers and 3g networks...as well as an arm and a leg from each of us, then it really can't be the best everywhere.

I just wish, service providers didn't monopolize our phone choices...this would be the best of both worlds. Because then you could have the best phone and the best coverage for your area.

Oh, to dream big. :D
