October 31st pre-order and haven't received anything yet. Can't wait, although I have to change all my locks to use it.

To those who say that this may enable hacking... well guess what, there's a window. It's glass. People can break it. Guess what, people can pick locks. Nothing is ever secure.

I just go for convenience. It's fantastic promo video but I didn't get it because I got the Lockitron instead. I get mine at the end of the month after 2 years of waiting! They've finally shipped over 9,000 of them though.

The reason I went with the Lockitron is because it can be installed over deadbolts and I like that as it is then a bit easier to change out if I need to change my keys.

Plus, the Lockitron was announced earlier and that's what I went with. Though the August Lock looks much sleeker.

I'm a bit apprehensive. Very few electronic locks appear to be reliable. I think Schlage, Kwikset, and Yale are only known reliable ones. I'm not impressed with lockitron (I had a preorder but canceled it), and I'm currently trying to decide if I want to cancel my August lock preorder, too. My preorder was in January, and so I probably have a while to wait.

Interested, but waiting as well....

I like the idea of having internet connected parts of my house, but I'm not going to waste money doing it for the sake of doing it either.

For example, I really don't see the value vs. the cost and increased complexity of setting up my indoor lights for remote control. Sure, you can make the house looked "lived in" by scheduling them to turn on and off on various schedules while you're away. But someone is usually here in our house. That one vacation trip we might do in a year where that would be beneficial? Cheaper and more sensible to just buy a few appliance and light timers and plug them in strategic places.

I did invest in a couple of EcoBee connected thermostats though (after reading about their advantages over Nest). Difficult to tell if and how much money I'm really saving by using them, as we just bought this house a few months ago and I installed them right away. (No baseline utility bill from before to compare to.) However, their web site seems to do a nice job of generating reports based on the data they collect, and the PIN lock code keeps people from cranking the A/C up to stupid levels during the day (a big problem we had with both the kids and with grandma when she stays here).

Interested in a well implemented smart door lock too, and the August looked promising. But I'll wait a while to see if a version 2 comes out based on the feedback of the early adopter crowd.

The Kwikset bluetooth lock is TERRIBLE simply from a standpoint of "pickability". The horizontal slider it uses in place of a pin and tumbler allows people to force it open in 30 seconds (with a little practice/skill) and not even leave any physical outside damage behind. The bluetooth tech is fine, but if the physical lock hardware is that sub-standard, it really makes me want to pass on it.

I think it's cool, but how many people will actually be trying this? So far this thread contains just one person who pre-ordered it...

I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather spend the $200 on the next iPhone, not the door.

I'd rather buy a Nest than an electronic door lock, just in terms of iHome priorities. Then lights. Call me old fashioned, but keys are cheap and I'll take em.

I preordered it. I have both Nest products as well.

I was one of the first 20K to reserve and I paid on on 10/4/13

I backed and received my Lockitron. The thing I like about it that none of these other products do is work over Wi-Fi. The reason why this is important is because if it doesn't then anyone that wants to get in your house has to download and install the app since it is based on bluetooth and you can't send it a command from your desk at work or while grocery shopping at the store. Not cool in my book, not for the amount of money I am spending and when there is a good alternative. Sure Lockitron has some work to do to make it really smooth, but they are getting it dialed in. But the main thing is it isn't reliant on an app on everyone's phone.

If you remember, please let me know when you get the email to confirm your order and shipping address. I ordered around the same time you did and am anxiously awaiting the email!

Yes. Unless you're rich and are living in some mansion, a burglar will just break a window. It's much easier and quicker. (Not to mention requiring much fewer brain cells. :p)

I have a Schlage keypad lock, that I can unlock via my iPhone, and I don't worry about hacking, because there's this nice window that burglars can break ....

Also, I do suppose in time there will be in time logging of the lock's action.

Smart lock...

Hi there,
I am here with the similar device like August Smart Lock and it called the WatchLock because it takes care of your house and and it can also be preferred as digital padlock...WatchLock combines a High Security mechanical lock with advanced technological GPS location system and GSM communication. The system uses GSM-based communication technologies to provide real-time* information about predefined events and location (RTLS – Real-Time Location System) through a web-based application, email or text message.

Not even close to the same think….shill

Just an update to anyone who has pre-ordered…
August has decided to practically ignore their pre-order customers and release the smart lock to Apple retail stores. If you're waiting to get one, I advise that you cancel.

The customer support has been lies on top of lies at this point about pre-orders getting the products. Otherwise, if you want one and want to take a chance with a sketchy company, you can buy it at an Apple retail store starting today.

Thanks for the info.

I tried the kwikset lock but forgot I can't get a kwikset lock to work smoothly in my door for some reason. so I got the Schlage keypad and it is a much higher quality lock and works so smoothly. Just got a smart things hub and I can have the lock and unlock as a come and go one button turns off all the lights and locks the doors. my blind wife can use the app and the smart thing hub lets you do so many things.

I've had mine for a few weeks now and it seems that most of the initial kinks — which weren't many — seem to be worked out. Auto-unlock works without fail now and I'm very confident that the lock will open up every single time now. As I walk out of the elevator down the hall to my door, it unlocks and I can just walk in.

This may seem like an unnecessary luxury but so did keyless entry into cars. How hard is it to insert the key in your car door? Then after that, how hard is it to pull the fob out and press the button. Convenience is good. The only dumb lock left in my life was the one I use the most. My home door.

Right now however, the August isn't very "smart" at all because it's isolated on to itself. Once it connects to IFTTT and directly other smart devices, it'll become truly useful.
