One thing I dislike about Australia is the lack of bookstores like Borders in the 'burbs. We are in Melbourne's inner suburbs and have to go all the way down to Knox to check out a decent bookstore (sorry guys, Collins/A&R at the malls just dont cut the mustard).

There's a Borders in Melbourne Central, which is probably the biggest I've been to, another one on Lygon St next to the Nova Cinema and another one at the Jam Factory on Chapel St. Don't know if you're near any of those, but they might be close than Knox.

I do like the one in MC but, I am based in Blackburn (eastern burbs) so either way, its a train journey (hate driving/trying to park in the CBD) or a drive down to Knox... If you compare things from a US/Canada point of view we are really lacking in things like that.

Mind, I would love a Australian equivalent of Amazon.

I was shocked when I saw that my in-laws have to buy the kids' books (text and notes) and all their supplies for school. I went to school in the UK and never even had to worry about taking so much as a pencil as the schools gave us one for the lesson if needed same for exercise books.

There was some Christmas parade on yesterday wasn't there? It looked nice on the news. (though I'm still a bit confused why there would be a Christmas parade in early NOVEMBER). Clearly it's the water playing havoc with your minds again. :p ;)

Honestly though, I've only been to Adelaide once, but from what I remember it's quite a nice city.

Christmas Pageant. It was amazing!

When I was four... :p

Oh, and you 'n your 20mm of rain can go shove it, ya wet pansie!

Ah, the beauty of the 20 minute city. I do agree though, it is... or at least the bit I have been to.

Twelve minutes if you know what you're doin'. :D

In all honesty, Adelaide is trying to set itself up as an education city so it might not be such a bad idea looking into it. It's much cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne to live here and it's really quite student-friendly.

Anywhere is cheaper to live than Melbourne or Sydney. Mrs A is in Perth at the moment, and I will be lucky to get her back from there. I bet that she's scanning the real estate sections of the "Westie".

Interestingly, there was a story on the news yesterday saying that the property market is soon going to be more expensive in Perth than in Sydney because of the resources boom.

if you come to brisbane in oz and want a really good private school, go to John Paul college. They provide laptops (sadly they are windows) from grade 4
EDIT: They are setting it up so it is almost like a university
BTW: i go there

i saw that as well... the cheapest housing is still in Hobart, but thats only because no-one wants to live there :p

its gonna suck when i move out... average of $400k in melbourne

We need more votes for Brisbane, it's a great city, but more importantely the lifestyle away from the city is great. The Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Bribe Island, Theme Parks (at the Gold Coast), Toowoomba, National Parks, and etc. They are all great.

Some info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brisbane

http://www.ourbrisbane.com/visitors/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_East_Queensland

On a plus they say the Queenslander culture here is great and more relaxed.

The Gold Coast hinterland/Mount Tambourine are my favourite places in Qld. Don't like the Gold Coast itself at all - too chintzy, tacky and crowded. Amazing the difference a short drive makes.

Wait, wait, wait. You simply want to finish your secondary schooling in another country? You can decide whether or not you want to move to Sydney or Melbourne? Where on God's green earth are your parents? What are you, like, seventeen? When I moved to Shanghai I had no say in any of this. I am thoroughly confused. WHY are you moving again?

Lots of people go overseas to study. He hasn't mentioned his parents at all, but I just assumed they would be supportive of the idea. The OP is just wanting a bit of info.

It's his dream mate, he's just getting the info.

One of the greatest reasons for moving to a new country is "Because I want to." Don't begrudge this guy of trying to organise a dream of his in a mature and thoughtful manner.

I guess the moral of the story here is:

Don't go to Adelaide - it's a hole. Cue mad jew in 3, 2, 1....

Adding another vote for Brisbane here.

Cheaper to live in than the southern cities (Sydney and Melbourne) and is much much nicer. Plenty of good private high schools (I went to one of the better ones, and reckon it was worth every cent my folks paid), and quite a few good uni's too.

I think Perth has become the most expensive city in Australia now (for living)..

our median house price has overtaken sydney, melb, gold cost, etc. I'm not joking.

our state supports all the other states (western australia has the resources the other states do not eg. mining)

we have the best beaches and sunset in the WORLD, full stop.

very relaxing, friendly and just generally great.

I'm not being biased, I've been to just about all cities in Australia :)

okay I'm slightly biased. hahahaha

serious now... anywhere in Australia would be great to live (except far north which is DAMN HOT)... and Adelaide.. (hahahaha, sorry)

jump on the net and check out some info on this country... it's excellent, everyon keeps moving here because it's the best place on earth to live. (no really, it is).

:D

Dammit! :D

Yeah, interesting what you're saying 'bout Perth. Fingers crossed, I'll be jumpin' ship on this ol' city o' churches, an gettin' down in the mineral mastercity in 2008. Notre Dame's meant to be a pretty cool uni.

lots of good uni's, Murdoch, Edith Cowan, Curtin, UWA, Notre Dame and more...

but hey, there's loads of uni's all over Oz :)

I've travelled a lot over the world, and must say that there's no place like Perth hehe, home sweet home!

Yeah, I've heard great things about Perth, I just haven't gotten around to going there yet. Perth and Darwin are the only state capitals I haven't visited.

  :( Gold Coast is the best place in Aus (Aside from Melbourne)

As the resident Canadian living in Australia™ at MacRumours, I'll chime in. I didn't read the entire thread though, so I'll just comment on what was said by ozontheroad. I have lived in Australia for 3 years now. ;)

Sort of...

Yes.

In some ways, yes; in many many other ways, no.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes, if you're white.

Yes.

If you're going to go to city in Australia, go to Sydney if you can live on the Eastern side of the city, or North-East, say near Manly. If you can go to Melbourne, good. ;) However, it's definitely colder than Sydney and isn't really the hot, sunny place you might be looking for. If you could find a high school in the Gold or Sunshine Coast, I'd do that. Brisbane is OK, but I'd rather be in Sydney.

Don't go to Adelaide. *yawn* Perth might be boring for you as well, and it's hard to travel from Perth to other big cities in Australia. The area north of Perth between Perth and Exmouth, or Perth and Broome, is stunning though.

Tasmania has the most beautiful scenery by far, but it's cold there and that's not what you want.

Perth is fantastic, but maybe a bit boring for you. Honestly, your best bet would be Gold or Sunshine Coast, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, and THEN Adelaide.

Melbourne is better than Sydney, Perth, etc..... but not for someone younger who wants to hang out on a sunny beach.

Take it from a fellow Canadian.

PS: If you want, I'll post a photo from some of these places in order to show you how some of these places look. ;)

Yeah, if you're a fan of carrying a small dog in a gold lame Louis-Vuitton-knock-off hand bag.

I hate the Gold Coast. Hate it. It's a terrible, horrible place to live.
Let's see how riled up I can get Vic.... :-D
