    Hey,

I'm a soldier in the middle-east, do you think it would be cool to buy an iPhone 3G from Australia, I mean, I heard they are "unlocked", right? Or am I missing something? I heard they are sold unlocked there. Or, what if I buy (via eBay) an iPhone from an country that has laws about locked phones? Sorry if this is an obvious question, I am a newbie to the iPhone world, been overseas for 2 years.

And yes, we have 3G where I am at, and many of us have personal cell-phones, we have to buy sim cards off base, then buy minutes from local vendors.

If you can get an unlocked iPhone you are good. Unlocked means unlocked, you can use it for any SIM card. Unless it is a legally unlocked iPhone you may have problems with software updates, so if you can find someplace, like France or Germany where they may have unlocked phone available, then you are good.
